International Maritime Organization (IMO) Advanced Regulations for Life-Saving Equipment and Fire Safety:
The last week of February, the Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment (SSE) gathered in London. Norway and The Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) were once again well represented under the leadership of Torstein D. Selsaas.
The main topics of the week were life-saving equipment and fire safety, specifically work related to the ventilation of partially enclosed lifeboats, the revision of SOLAS Chapter 3 and the LSA Code, as well as further development of the FTP Code.
Fire safety was a particularly important topic, with a focus on safety measures for container ships and discussions on fire protection for vessels transporting electric vehicles. Additionally, work was carried out on the validation of a model course, in which the NMA participated remotely.
The NMA played a central role in the meeting, including Kim Are Paulsen leading the fire safety working group. This ensured strong Norwegian visibility and influence in the ongoing discussions.
The meeting served as an important arena for the further development of safety standards in shipping.
Norways active participation reaffirmed our strong position in international maritime safety efforts. Cooperation within the IMO remains crucial for the shipping industry, and it is inspiring to see our experts contribute their expertise.
