Today, the Initia team attended the official opening of Auckland Airport’s Premium Outlet Centre development – Mānawa Bay. Mānawa Bay is set to re-define the outlet retail experience in New Zealand, with over 100 iconic stores and a variety of dining options on offer. Initia has been involved with the Mānawa Bay project since 2021, providing geotechnical design and construction monitoring services through to recent completion. It was exciting to see the efforts of the entire design and construction team come together today to deliver what is an architecturally striking 35,000m2 building situated in park-like surrounds overlooking the Manukau Harbour. We have been keeping busy with construction monitoring of piling works at a high rise hotel project on Wakefield St in Auckland’s City Centre. The project comprises a 16-storey tower and a two level basement. The design features offsite modular construction of the hotel rooms, a first for New Zealand.   The piling works include foundation piles for the building and retaining wall piles for the basement excavation which will be up to about 10m in depth. Initia has been involved in the design of the project since 2018 – it is a challenging site from a design and construction point of view due to its confined space and asymmetric ground profile, with two sides of the basement effectively having no retained height. This means more traditional internal propping solutions from one wall to the other were not feasible on this site. The final temporary works design therefore involves temporary ground anchors for lateral support of the basement walls during excavation. #GeotechnicalEngineers #Construction #Engineering #HighRise #AucklandCBD #ProjectUpdate #DeepFoundation #HotelDevelopment

The team at Initia is proud to have supported the delivery of Auckland Airport’s new Transport Hub at the International Terminal. The Transport Hub development comprises a four-storey car parking building, with Pick-up and Drop-off (PUDO) lanes for buses and light vehicles on the ground floor level as well as short term parking, valet services and premium carparking. Works are ongoing over the upper levels of the building and for pedestrian and landscaping improvements to the areas surrounding the International Terminal, and the Novotel & Pullman Hotels. Initia’s involvement in the project commenced in 2020 with geotechnical investigations and geotechnical analysis - identifying the preferred foundation system – a forest of 10-14 m long, driven timber poles. Static and dynamic pile load testing was conducted to verify design load capacities, installation methodologies and to assess noise and vibration effects from piling activities. Construction monitoring and certification of the foundations and building/pavement subgrades has been undertaken by Initia over the last 2 years.  We would like to congratulate our geotechnical engineers Nick Speight, Seven Baker, and Kent Dalziel for their significant contributions to the success of this project. We would also like to thank the significant team of other professionals involved in this successful project. We wish you all the best for the remainder of the build. Civil Services took the time to show the new upcoming engineers around a soil nailing job completed on Havelock North hills. A large slip as a result from Cyclone Gabrielle provided a complex problem to a difficult site. We are excited to share progress on our latest project—a significant subdivision in Ellerslie, overlooking the iconic racecourse! 🏇 This project involves the design and construction of multiple retaining walls within the subdivision and the certification of bulk earthworks. Although we are currently battling the winter earthworks season, during the sunny weather windows, our team is focused on the construction of the 8m high geogrid reinforced slope. This slope will form the foundation of a 97m long and 5.3m high mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall. 🌞 We're happy to be collaborating with March Cato, ensuring the highest standards in construction and engineering. Together, we’re overcoming the weather challenges and making substantial strides in transforming the landscape.
