Supporting children, families and communities to thrive

About us

Community of the Year - New Zealander of the Year 2023! The Kindness Collective is a nationwide charity that spreads kindness by connecting children and families with the things they need (from everyday essentials to moments of joy) and supports over 100,000 people living in hardship each year. We are community-led, which means our work is varied. One day we’re packing pyjamas, packing food boxes and the next, planting potatoes. Our unique approach means we go where the need is and help where it matters most. To learn more, donate or volunteer your time, head to www.kindness.org.nz

  • “I work with this child at our school and she has spoken a lot about not having enough food. She often doesn’t eat before or after school as there isn't enough food for everyone at home". In an ideal world, families would have enough to eat and enough to get by. Kids would start the day with breakfast, parents could pay the rent, the power bill and put food on the table. The stark reality is that in 2025, food insecurity is on the rise and we are hearing stories like this every day. It really doesn’t have to be this way and so we’re grateful for everyone who agrees that we all have a part to play in keeping kids, our most precious taonga, fed, nourished, warm and well. 📸: some of this month's community partners, we love your work team! 🙌

  • Yesterday, some of the Tegel Foods Ltd team spent their morning volunteering at our community hub. Together, they packed food boxes for 72 families in need, supported by NZ Police, Victim Support, and our daily referrals. They packed Easter treats for 200 families and also assembled LEGO packs for eight schools, providing children with an opportunity to learn through play. For nearly five years, Tegel has been a key partner and has been instrumental in ensuring families in need supported by our organisation have access to food. We're always grateful for their hard work and ongoing support helping families to thrive, right across New Zealand. ❤️🍗📦

  • “When the kids come to LEGO Club it is a chance for them to be kids again. Some of the stress from the outside world disappears and they can just play”. Kindness Cup school teacher We're proud to work with the LEGO Group and The LEGO Foundation to deliver the Kindness Cup programme, with over 12,000 kind kids and 53 LEGO Clubs across the country! The programme supports kids to build their self-confidence, learn new skills and empowers them to dream big. We're excited about all the fun workshops, events and resources we'll be providing for our schools over the next year, thanks to LEGO. • "Always blown away by the support from KC. It has taken away a significant amount of stress each month from whānau who are simply not able to afford food and essentials. Having nappies available as well has been a game-changer as these are so expensive and I have come across many whānau who simply cannot afford it. So appreciate your mahi!" - Turuki Healthcare Social Worker Over the last 12 months we've provided essentials and moments of joy for 273 whānau supported by Turuki Healthcare. We're grateful to support their mahi and love seeing their hardworking, friendly faces in our hub each week. Ngā mihi Turuki for being a part of our community of kindness. ✨ #ittakesallofus

  • Nau mai, haere mai, welcoming New Zealand Food Network to our community! We're grateful to be the newest of their 65 food hubs in Aotearoa, getting food to where it's needed most. We've had potatoes, kiwifruit, capsicums, carrots, apples, cereal, milk powder donated so far, and even some food for our furry friends. It's wonderful to have our chillers and freezers stocking more fresh produce to better support the 110 community partners we provide food and other essentials regularly for! Ngā mihi nui to all the donors who want to ensure every kiwi is fed and nourished. ❤️🍎

  • We started the PJ Project in 2021 in West Auckland as a response to refuge leaders, early learning centres and schools requesting pyjamas and warm clothes for kids in the colder months. Four years later and it's now a nationwide programme with PJs delivered to over 25,000 kids, supported by over 300 organisations, right from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South, with collection bins in The Warehouse stores across the country! Registrations are open for collections via the link in our comments, so get your work, sports team, club, school, centre or your mates together to join the PJ Project from the 1st May. ✨#ittakesallofus

  • A little while ago we got a call, asking if we'd like a donation of thousands of brand new toys, the only thing being we'd need to get each one into the hands of children, before March. Of course we said yes! 🧸🚂 Huge thank you the super generous Hasbro team and incredible BAPS Charities community for entrusting us not only receive the massive donation but to handle the logistics and delivery of getting them to kids who need a little bit of joy the most. We've delivered toys to kids through our referrals, MDM Women's Refuge, Starship Children's Hospital, Woven Earth, Kidz First, New Zealand Police, Give a Kid a Blanket, Nurturing Families, ALL sorts of amazing organisations! What a wonderful display of kindness and community collaboration at it's best. Thank you SO much to everyone who made this happen. 💜 #ittakesallofus

  • As well as running our other programmes, keeping up with the demand for food, toiletries and other essentials is now an vital part of our mission to help kids and their families thrive. February, traditionally a little quieter, has been as busy as the winter months, which leaves us feeling concerned about how families in need will fare as it grows colder. We are truly grateful for all you do to help families supported by these incredible Police Officers, Nurses, Social Workers and Teachers below, put food on the table, keep their kids warm and the lights on in their homes. ✨ #ittakesallofus

  • Cooking with your kids is a luxury of both time and resources that, for many families, feels out of reach. During our Manaaki Ora programme, 83% of participants reported improved wellbeing, while 31% also developed new skills, with many families making a meal from a recipe together for the first time. We believe every whānau should have access to kai and be able to cook fresh, healthy food at home. We’d love to hear about your favourite budget-friendly meal that you cook with your family - share in the comments or send us a message! 🍝🍚❤️
