A united team of engineers, architects, musicians, designers, and scientists delivering exceptional acoustic design

About us

Marshall Day Acoustics (MDA) is one of the world's leading acoustic consultancies. We provide specialist consulting in all areas of acoustics, with expertise in noise and vibration for a wide variety of projects including intricate performing arts spaces, large-scale civic and commercial developments, and expansive industry and transportation infrastructure. Sir Harold Marshall and Christopher Day established Marshall Day Acoustics in Auckland, NZ in 1981. Peter Fearnside came on board as the third partner and founded Marshall Day Acoustics in Australia in 1987. MDA has been proudly 100% employee owned for more than 25 years, with over 30 employees in New Zealand and Australia invested in the company. In our team, we have expert skills in traditional areas (environmental, building and room acoustics) as well as more specialised fields like vibration, marine and underwater acoustics, sound insulation theory and data acquisition. We provide our advice in the most appropriate way for each project. This may include delivering reports, design advice, peer reviews, expert evidence, seminars, community and stakeholder consultation, developing policies and guideline or virtual reality simulations. In addition to our specialist acoustic consulting work, we develop high quality acoustic design tools (INSUL, IRIS, dBWav, dBSea, Zorba) that are used globally by scholars, consultants, designers, and manufacturers. We are continually looking to improve our services, expand our technical expertise and develop our equipment and systems in order to provide the most comprehensive and cutting-edge design tools.

Today, we announced a landmark $30 million, 25-year philanthropic partnership with Minderoo Foundation to support Edith Cowan University’s Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. The largest donation ever to be received by an Australian performing arts institution will support ECU and WAAPA’s vision to deliver a bold new stage at ECU City, including state-of-the-art performance and learning venues, as well as internationally distinguished performance training for emerging artists. When our flagship new campus opens in semester one, 2026, students will learn, create and perform in world-class spaces.   The $853 million ECU City project is the centrepiece of the $1.7 billion Perth City Deal – a collaboration between the Australian Government, the Western Australian Government and ECU to deliver Perth’s first fully comprehensive, inner-city university campus. As seen in this month's VPELA Revue, MDA is pleased to offer Sound Thinking with Liz Hui, donation-based noise guidance for developers and town planners at the early stages of the planning process. Acoustic guidance at the preliminary stage of the planning process can save time and money and lead to better design outcomes. Liz Hui, a Senior Associate with extensive experience in the planning industry is the main point of contact for this initiative. Shaun King recently visited the Central Interceptor May Road site, where he went down a 75m shaft and ventured a short distance into the 4.5m wide tunnel. Shaun said it was great to see the tunnel in person after so much hard work has gone into the surface sites. The Central Interceptor is the largest wastewater project in New Zealand, with the tunnel running for 16.2km from Herne Bay to Māngere. To deliver the project, there are 17 construction sites along the tunnel route. Marshall Day Acoustics, led by Mat Cottle, first became involved in the Central Interceptor project in 2011 when they were engaged by Watercare to assess construction and operational noise effects. This involved ambient noise level monitoring, computer noise modelling, preparation of the noise impact assessment, input to the formulation of resource consent and designation conditions, and presentation of expert evidence at the hearing. Since 2019, the MDA team has worked closely with the Ghella Abergeldie JV to predict and assess construction noise and vibration, prepare Construction Noise and Vibration Management Plans and Activity-Specific Noise Management Plans, assist with neighbour consultation, construction noise and vibration monitoring, and train the Environmental team on noise and vibration monitoring. The MDA team, consisting of Mathew Cottle, Shaun King, and Reuben Jelleyman, has enjoyed working on such an interesting project with Watercare Services Limited and Ghella Abergeldie Joint Venture (GAJV) and appreciates the opportunity to visit the tunnel. #CentralInterceptor #wastewater #tunneling #engineering #environmentalnoise #acoustics Photo 1: Muck bin being lifted out of shaft Photo 2: View up shaft Photo 3: Noise shed over shaft to enable 24/7 tunneling Photo 4: Shaun King in tunnel Photo 5: Tunnel Photo 6: locomotive delivering liners to TBM

Our Auckland and Melbourne teams got LOUD last week to support children and young people with hearing loss. Thank you to our team members and supporters who generously donated to these worthy causes: The Shepherd Centre, The Hearing House, Southern Cochlear Implant Programme (SCIP). MAURICE AND I is a feature-length documentary by Rick Harvie and Jane Mahoney, celebrating the transformative architectural partnership of Sir Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney. After nearly losing their life's work in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, the iconic architects, along with a dedicated group including Sir Harold Marshall, fought to save and restore a venue close to our hearts, the Christchurch Town Hall. The Christchurch Town Hall, with acoustic innovations by Sir Harold Marshall, revolutionised the design approach to performance spaces and acoustic engineering. Sir Harold was very pleased that the Christchurch Town Hall was rebuilt rather than another new building being constructed. MAURICE AND I is currently showing at cinemas around New Zealand and is featured in the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam in the Netherlands. It is highly recommended. At the recent Acoustics NZ 2024 conference held 2-4 September at the Christchurch Town Hall, the Acoustical Society of New Zealand (ASNZ) honoured our co-founder, Chris Day, with a Fellowship. This award recognises his significant contributions and long-standing commitment to the acoustic consulting industry, as well as his dedication to the ASNZ. Chris was incredibly grateful to accept the Fellowship, which he dedicated to the great Sir Harold Marshall. He now joins the ranks of fellow MDA team members (past and present), Sir Harold, Siiri Wilkening, Graham Warren, Stuart Camp and Keith Ballagh. Chris is a founding partner of Marshall Day Acoustics, with over 40 years of experience in acoustics. Originally from Australia, where he studied Mechanical Engineering at Monash University, he embarked on a year-long sailing trip with Peter Fearnside before settling in New Zealand in 1981. It was at this time that Sir Harold Marshall and Chris Day officially opened their doors in Auckland as Marshall Day Acoustics. His engineering background complemented Sir Harold’s architectural skills and paved the way for Marshall Day Acoustics to become one of the world’s largest independent acoustic consultancies. Chris is known for being exceptionally kind, always open and willing to share his knowledge and experience, and his unwavering passion for the acoustics industry with others. We’re thrilled to see his many achievements acknowledged, so please join us in congratulating Chris on this well-deserved achievement. #acoustics #asnz #acousticalsocietyofnewzealand #fellowship
