Check out this inspiring story about our community's dedication to education and innovation! 📚 Last May, One Tree Hill College embarked on an incredible journey by purchasing a 1970s house from Kāinga Ora for just $1! 🏡 Over the next10 months, their Year 12 and 13 trades education students put in the mahi and learned skills by doing by transforming this dilapidated house into a modern home that meets 2025 standards. 🛠️🔧    Now, this beautifully refurbished house is ready to go up for auction! 🎉 Our team members, George Ashby and Helen Taylor were so inspired by this project when they heard about it on TVNZ's 1News that they reached out to Charlotte McKeon the teacher leading the pre-trades program at the school. After visiting the house and witnessing the students' hard work firsthand, they saw a fantastic opportunity to support this initiative even further. As a result, we were delighted to be able to donate a 55Inch TV and Soundbar, a Frontload washing machine and dryer, a double-door fridge and a vacuum stick to be included in the house when it's sold! 🖥️📱 "It was great to have the opportunity to help build a brighter future for these students," says George. "This project is a shining example of what we can achieve when we come together as a community.," added Helen. 📷 PIC: Helen and George from Mercury with builder, Paul Williams inside the newly refurbished home. • We’re entering the final stage of our $90M, three-year upgrade at Karāpiro Hydro Station on the Waikato River! 💧⚡ The third and final turbine and generator—after nearly 70 years of renewable energy production—has now been removed. Up next: the installation of a state-of-the-art Kaplan turbine from our partner ANDRITZ Hydro in Finland. A huge thanks to everyone who, over the past 2.5 years, has recorded more than 190,000 hours of work on the project! We’re on track to complete the job in August 2025. 🔧 What this means for the future:  ✅ Increased installed capacity from 96 MW to 112.5 MW  ✅ An additional 32 GWh of renewable energy annually  ✅ Enough to power 19,000 homes with clean electricity  #RenewableEnergy #HydroPower #Sustainability #EnergyInnovation #Karāpiro

  • Last week, as we geared up to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th, we were absolutely thrilled to welcome the incredible Dr. Mai Chen to our office! 🎉 Dr. Chen delivered an inspiring talk on "Surviving Your Professional Career: On the Shortness of Life and How to Be Successful & Happy." Her insights were truly enlightening and resonated deeply with our team. We had an amazing turnout, with about 100 of our team members joining the kōrero. It was a fantastic opportunity to come together, learn, and be inspired by Dr. Chen's wisdom and experience. 💡✨ A huge thank you to Dr. Mai Chen for sharing her knowledge and to everyone who attended and contributed to the vibrant discussion. Read Phil Gibson's Op Ed Flexibility is a key ingredient for transition’s success. In case you missed it, our Executive GM Strategic Affairs shared his thoughts on the critical role of flexibility in New Zealand's energy transition, highlighting its potential to maintain supply during high demand and low renewable periods. We advocate for a coordinated, long-term plan to scale flexibility, involving policy prioritisation, data access, and investment in diverse flexible solutions. Phil's OpEd was first published on Energy News last week and you can also read it on our website.

Flexibility has a critical role to play in New Zealand’s energy transition, helping keep the lights on when demand is high and renewable supply is low. A smart, flexible system can also provide significant savings - of up to $14 billion per decade -through optimising network use and avoiding unnecessary infrastructure spend. There’s been good steps forward in encouraging more flexibility in the electricity system, but there’s more to do for big gains. For more check out my op ed at https://lnkd.in/gGvgk9Zq

This week marks the end of another incredible summer internship at Mercury NZ, and I wanted to reflect on these amazing experiences.      Over these two summers, I have been fortunate to have worked with Mercury’s Technical Safety Team and Dam Safety Team. Working in these teams has given me invaluable exposure to hydro-generation operations.  One of the most rewarding projects during my time at Mercury was contributing to updating the surveillance procedures for all of their hydro-generation sites. Through this, I had the privilege of shadowing the Resources Team. Their willingness to share their knowledge and teach me new skills made this experience invaluable. So I wanted to extend a big thank you to them. This project took me across all of Mercury’s hydro-generation sites, where I explored the structures and critical instrumentation used to monitor their safety and performance. I have had the chance to engage with highly passionate and experienced individuals along the Waikato River, whose insights made the experience even more valuable. Beyond this, I had the opportunity to participate in Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) workshops, Annual Dam Safety Review (ADSR) inspections, and structural assessments. These opportunities have led to experiences I will cherish, and I am incredibly grateful. It was incredible to see the scale and complexity of these structures up close. I am beyond grateful to everyone at Mercury for their mentorship, support, and the opportunity to contribute to these projects. A huge thank you to Leigh McLellan and my colleagues for their time, effort, and guidance throughout my internship. Excited to see what’s next!
