It's wet and windy and just what we need ❤️ Following the driest start to the year on record, this week’s weather has provided a timely boost our hydro lakes and wind generation. Up to 300mm of rain has fallen in the Waiau catchment, with lesser quantities for the Waitaki catchment since the weekend. “It buys us time,” says Meridian GM Wholesale Chris Ewers. “We do need more rain to fall over the next couple of months to support us over winter, but it was still very welcome." The weather fronts that bring rain also increase wind generation, which helps ease the pressure on hydro generation and allows us to store that water for the future. Over the last two days Meridian’s wind farms lifted from about 10% to 30% of Meridian’s total generation. After a quiet couple of months, most of our wind farms have been hitting or nearing maximum capacity - Harapaki Wind Farm, in Hawke’s Bay, achieved a whopping 174MW on Tuesday! This is what billions of dollars investment in new generation looks like 📈   Between 2010 and 2025 New Zealand saw a huge amount of new generation to replace aging thermal facilities. When we first mentioned an electric digger was being trialled on one of our sites, some people were sceptical 🤔 Too quiet! Too hard to charge! Not grunty enough! Well, we liked it, and our contractors *really* liked it. In fact, United Civil Construction Limited liked it so much, they purchased it. This mean machine's now being used across their sites, including our Ruakākā BESS project. It's emission-free, it's easy to charge, and it makes just enough noise to know it's there. The team says the reduced noise makes it a much more pleasant work environment, so the benefits keep on coming! It’s always an incredible privilege to welcome new kiwi to West Wind Farm, and knowing we are part of a truly incredible story for Aotearoa New Zealand. Last week, some of our Meridian team and their families joined The Capital Kiwi Project, supporters, and manu whenua Taranaki Whānui to welcome some new arrivals – nine kiwi-nui (North Island brown kiwi) that had made the journey from Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari in Waikato. It’s thanks to the amazing work of Capital Kiwi over the last seven years that these precious taonga are now roaming wild among the western hills of Wellington. It’s a wonderful success story, and we feel very proud knowing that they are now part of the West Wind whānau. And, it already sounds like the kiwi are enjoying their new home! This big battery we're building at Ruakākā will be a game-changer ⚡ It’ll provide 200MWh of electricity – that’s enough to power 60,000 homes for up to two hours - helping to meet demand during those busy periods. It's the first large-scale grid battery energy storage site (BESS) in New Zealand, and it’s being built with safety, security and efficiency top of mind. We’re using batteries from Saft, one of the world’s top battery providers, and we’re using great local companies to bring the project together.
