He tangata, he tangata, he tangata. What is the most important thing? It is people, it is people, it is people. As I received my New Zealand citizenship (while remaining a French citizen) ealier this week, I reflect on my seven-year professional journey in the antipodes and feel I finally understand the depth of this Māori proverb. We often talk about key defining moments in our lives or careers - but in the end, shouldn't we talk about key defining people? Since landing in New Zealand on 9 November 2017, people have shaped my journey in ways I couldn’t have anticipated. Yes, I worked hard. Yes, I was determined to build a new life. But without people - those who gave me my first job in a large NZ corporate, who encouraged me when I doubted myself, who assured me I wouldn’t just fit in but contribute, who grabbed a coffee with me and made introductions, who pushed me out of my comfort zone - none of this would have been possible. When I arrived with my two pieces of luggage, I told myself I didn’t need support. I was strong enough, focused, unemotional - I believed it would be easy. My mission was clear: secure a job, get a visa, and build a future where my “new” family could thrive. Seven years later, I feel humbled - and proud. This journey wasn’t just about luck. It was about hard work and delivering value, about building and nurturing connections, about learning to adapt. It was about being vulnerable yet becoming more resilient. To everyone who played a role in this journey - thank you. I am forever grateful. And as I move forward, I will continue to give back - surpporting NZ communities, being a great friend, and a great business partner. Because in the end, "we are the average of the people we surround ourselves with.” as Matthieu Stefani often says in his podcast "Generation do it yourself". It was a pleasure to host Angela Hodder MSc Assoc CIPD of the Industry and Parliament Trust in late 2024. The exchange of experience and knowledge was incredibly valuable, and the NZBPT looks forward to future engagement.
This year, Angela Hodder MSc Assoc CIPD, the IPT’s Head of Office and Company Secretary, had the pleasure of visiting the IPT’s overseas counterpart, The New Zealand Business and Parliament Trust (NZBPT), on a secondment to discuss each organisation’s programmes and the exchanging of ideas. During her visit, she spent time in the New Zealand Parliament and attended one of the NZBPT full day training seminars to see first-hand how their parliamentary training is delivered to businesses. She also had the opportunity to meet with Barbara Kuriger MP, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, where Barbara was particularly interested in understanding the IPT’s governance, Fellowship programmes and MP engagement. Angela continued her visit with a trip to Auckland, to attend an MP’s away day visit to Sky City who are a supporting organisation, and a business networking event held for all supporters of the NZBPT. Finally, Angela gave a presentation to the NZBPT’s Trust Board on all aspects of the IPT and its programmes. The visit was incredibly informative for both sides and the established connections made will ensure a continued sharing of information and ideas between both organisations moving forward. Thank you to the New Zealand Business & Parliament Trust and Darryl Stevens MNZM for welcoming Angela.
