About us

riders&elephants makes simple, human-focused games that reimagine the way people can connect and grow. At work. For their customers. Within themselves. Our mission is to humanise decisions by getting people talking. We flip the conversations leaders and people can have around culture, performance, expectations, experiences and wellbeing. We give leaders a simple, proven, structured, innovative way to emotionally connect with their teams. And we deliver people the language they need to make that happen. We believe in people’s right to express themselves and to tap their emotions to challenge and shift behaviours. Our games help people speak their truth through simple, powerful words. “What a valuable Course! The ECD Masterclass provided insight to the evolution, psychology, practical application, and flexibility of using the ECD cards in a Workshop. The templates and tools shared are invaluable and will have such a positive impact in my application of the cards in future Workshops. I can't wait to run my next session!” - Marah G, Manager Learning & Talent Solutions, The Walt Disney Company.

This week's #ECDinthewild. "It can be easier to share stories about our feelings with complete strangers than with the people in our workplace." What do you think? Is this true for you? Why, or why not? Today I ran a Meetup for 8 wonderful business people at the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce using the Emotional Culture Deck from riders&elephants. Together we used the cards to think about our emotions, the whole range of them that we feel as human beings, not just the ones that we want to feel. Choosing a black card and a white card that best describe how we've felt over the last week, then sharing the stories of why we'd chosen those cards is always interesting. These are conversations we'd never normally have with someone we'd never met before, but it was easy. And liberating! When we share how we feel and why, we can feel lighter! And acknowledged, and seen, and understood. Acknowledging the emotion enables us to move through it - Name it to Tame it." And "a problem shared is a problem halved"... there is a real power in sharing the story with another person. It might have felt easier during this session to share these stories with total strangers, and yet this is also something that can make a real difference in teams. These conversations bring people closer, build relationships, enable team members to feel seen and acknowledged, not bottling up things that are affecting them. And all this enables them to bring more of their best to the team and the work you're doing together. I love the power of the Emotional Culture Deck for helping people explore what it means to be human. To take the power and the judgement and the fear out of the emotions we don't want to feel. To celebrate and enjoy the full range of emotions we do want to feel. And to feel PROUD of our own achievements and SUPPORTED on our journeys." - Cathy Sheppard, ECD Certified Consultant Tag #emotionalculturedeck to be featured!

How your people feel directly impacts your customers’ experience. Your customers and stakeholders experience emotions through their interactions with you. If you’re not deliberate and strategic about the emotions you want to foster and intentional about managing and addressing the undesired emotions within your team, your stakeholders will inevitably feel the effects. So yesterday in Wellington, we explored how we create these conversations, plans and strategies! We had the incredible privilege of hosting our first-ever ECD Emotional Stakeholder Engagement Course. I want to take a moment to celebrate these amazing, curious, and daring early adopters who took the leap and became the world’s first ECD Stakeholder Practitioners! 🙌 This group embodies the spirit of curiosity and courage in our community, diving into new ways of thinking about stakeholder and customer relationships and how emotions play a crucial role in shaping them. They are pioneers, leading the way in rehumanising the workplace and setting the stage for others to follow. During the course, we explored how to use The ECD to design emotion-led stakeholder experiences, connecting EX & CX—drawing inspiration from one of my all-time favourite ECD & CXD projects by Melanie Howell. We also focused on building human-centred partnerships that are built on a foundation of shared understanding of the emotions of the people within them. Even though this course is all about Stakeholder (& Customer) engagement, it was also a bit of a trojan horse into emotional culture building. After all, how your people feel greatly influences your customers’ experience of your organisation, service, or brand. This course is just one of three new certifications we’ve launched in 2024, and we’re thrilled to see how these certifications will expand globally. Stay tuned for more exciting news as our new ECD Specialist Courses will soon be delivered by our incredible ECD Certified Consultants in 15 countries around the world (and counting)! A huge thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday—you’re making history and helping us flip the script on how organisations engage with their stakeholders (and the people who serve them). #EmotionalCultureDeck #Leadership #StakeholderEngagement #ECDPractitioners #Innovation #WorkplaceCulture #LeadershipDevelopment #ridersandelephants

Have you heard of social emotion regulation? It's this beautiful process where we help each other manage our emotions. It's about showing up for one another in those messy, vulnerable moments and offering genuine support. Validation plays a crucial role here, it's the most comforting and preferred way to provide emotional support. It’s like saying, "I see you, I hear you, and what you're feeling is okay." Among various ways to help reframe situations, temporal distancing—looking at the situation from a future perspective—also proves to be just as helpful. It allows us to step back and gain clarity, offering a different lens to view our challenges. It’s all about holding space for each other with compassion and understanding. This week's #ECDinthewild. "Succession and Conflict Resolution" and "Steward Leadership" NTW2024 workshops - together with Saliza Abdullah of BG Capital Holdings Group of Companies, we advocate for sustainability in family businesses, and these sessions were a testament to that commitment. One of the most profound aspects of the sessions was the use of the Emotional Culture Deck by riders&elephants. This tool facilitated an intimate and meaningful experience for each participant, where it helped bridge deeper understanding. Family business members shared feelings and voiced their opinions - emotional dynamics that had impacted their professional and personal relationships. There was a palpable sense of empowerment as they navigated these conversations, realizing they were not alone in their experiences. As I facilitated these sessions, I witnessed the power of emotional honesty in building genuine empathy and stronger bonds. This experience reinforced the importance of addressing the emotional culture within family businesses for sustainable leadership, succession planning, managing conflicts, and advocating steward leadership. Labeling our emotions is powerful. When we identify and name what we’re feeling, we create a space for greater self-awareness and emotional regulation. This practice can reduce the intensity of negative emotions, allowing us to manage them more effectively.
