It’s fungi fact Friday! Fungi come in all sorts of shapes, colours, and sizes. Some species are mistaken for plants, flowers, and even insects due to their unusual appearance, just like the one pictured here! Any ideas on which fungi this is? 🤔 #fungifactfriday #fungi #mushroom #mycology

It's fungi fact friday and halloween is just around the corner! To celebrate the spooky season, this weeks fact is about zombie fungi 🧟 Recently popularised by "The Last of Us" TV drama, Ophiocordyceps unilateralis truly is a zombie fungus. The fungus infects and parasitises insects, consuming them from the inside out and controlling the insects behaviour. When the fungi is ready to disperse its spores, it compels the insect to climb to a vantage point before erupting from the insects head. If you're feeling brave, National Geographic have a cool video:

It turns out mushrooms may be even better given one large portabello mushroom has more potassium than a medium sized banana" - Miranda. 🍄 🍌

It's fungi fact friday! 🍄 Kiwi's have always been big fans of fungi - so much so that we are the only country in the world to put a mushroom on our bank notes. The mushroom you can see on our $50 note is the werewere-kōkako. Ngāi Tūhoe describe the iconic blue wattle of the kōkako (NZ native bird) coming from the bird rubbing its cheek against the mushroom, hence their link and appearance together on the bank note! If you're interested in werewere-kōkako, there is a cool article on the mushroom here: https://buff.ly/3zvWh8m

It's Fungi Fact Friday! Fungi in fashion is more common than you might think. One particular species of fungi, Trichoderma reesi, produces enzymes that break down cotton. Under controlled conditions, this enzyme is sometimes used to make stonewashed jeans, changing their appearance and making the fabric feel softer.
