🌊 Sea Pact calls for the broader seafood industry to collaborate on and support EM efforts. 🐟 With small scale fishers in the United States facing increasing regulatory costs, Sea Pact is exploring ways that new technologies can enable cost-effective at-sea monitoring and compliance.  One such technology is Electronic Monitoring (EM), which refers to the use of electronic technologies, such as cameras, sensors, and GPS tracking, to monitor fishing activities and enforce regulations. To date, many EM efforts in the U.S. have been led by harvesters, regulators, and researchers, but there is an opportunity for the broader seafood industry to collaborate on and support EM efforts to ensure harvesters can pilot these technologies without bearing the full cost burden of adoption. Courtesy of @EM4Fish, @The Pew Charitable Trusts has released a report from its Second Global Artificial Intelligence in Fisheries Monitoring Summit held in Hawaii earlier this year. The summit saw 35 experts from around the world sharing their perspectives on how AI / machine learning and electronic monitoring (EM) can deliver practical and effective transparency and accountability in fishing. Key takeaways include the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration, ensuring that experts in fishing, video, AI, and software engineering co-create solutions together, data ownership and privacy is a complex cross-boundary issue, and topics such as security and ethics need to be included from the start. #ai #machinelearning #electronicmonitoring #fisheries #seafood https://lnkd.in/ePJ8uheA

In an interesting technology / fisheries crossover, a group of scientists are working with Australia’s commercial fishing industry to gather ocean observation data using special devices on fishing vessels.
