With the impacts of climate change now part of our lived reality, tomorrow is too late to decarbonise our built environment. In response, we have developed a Go Zero – Low Carbon Design Guide, which provides a practical roadmap to help reduce the carbon intensity of every project. It sets out why everyone should contemplate investing in sustainable design, what design strategies can be used in practice, and how to measure the results and impact. We’re excited to share this open-source resource with you and the industry more broadly, with the hope that it empowers better ways of designing and delivering buildings in close collaboration between clients, consultants, and contractors. Property represents the largest global asset class by value and it’s also responsible for 37% of total carbon emissions – which makes our existing building stock high value and energy intensive assets. Making better use of our existing buildings is therefore a key commercial and environmental strategy to maximise value in all its forms. The transformation of One Queen Street in Auckland, from a dated brutalist building into Deloitte Centre and Intercontinental Hotel - now one of the city’s most prestigious addresses - provides a global exemplar in adaptive reuse best practice. The building has just been awarded 6 Star Green Star accreditation which represents world leadership in sustainability, while the precinct is thriving through mixed-use activation, showcasing the immense potential of adaptive reuse to transform assets and our cities. In our open-source Go Zero – Low Carbon Design Guide we provide a comprehensive overview of design strategies to reduce the embodied and operational carbon through considered design, including the adaptive reuse of our existing building stock.
