Countdown is now officially Woolworths New Zealand, part of Woolworths Group! Last year we announced our transformation from Countdown to Woolworths, today, as we continue on this endeavour, we are excited to launch our official Woolworths New Zealand LinkedIn page.   Over the past number of months we’ve made significant progress in improving our offerings for customers and team across Aotearoa. We’ve launched a new rewards programme; opened a state of the art distribution centre in Christchurch; invested in store security; refreshed stores to create better spaces for our local communities and continue to rebrand our 194 stores. As we continue to push towards a better tomorrow for our customers and team we are excited to welcome our new brand identity and LinkedIn Page. We’re so excited to share more of our team and business stories with you all, head over to Woolworths New Zealand to stay up to date! Spencer Sonn Bríd Drohan-Stewart Ella McInerney (MAHRI)

    Company Director / Retired

After an amazing career with Woolworths New Zealand which spans more than 30 years, I have made the decision to retire in July of this year. As I look back on my time with WWNZ, the element that stands out for me is the people. WWNZ attracts some of the best and the brightest and I’ve had the pleasure and privilege to work shoulder to shoulder with people across all areas of the business and to grow, develop, and mentor team members. It’s a rare thing when a business becomes your family and I treasure that. I’ve also worked with a range of suppliers and built relationships based on trust and integrity. Who would have known when I started as a Butchery Manager in Porirua that I would have been retiring from the ELT of WWNZ some 34 years later. I am leaving the Commercial Team in good hands and have every confidence WWNZ will continue to go from strength to strength and face into the future with clarity and purpose. I’ll take some time soon to reflect on my journey and connect with people. At the moment the overwhelming feeling is gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunities provided to me, for the people who have influenced my career, for the mark I have been able to make on the modern WWNZ, and for my family who have supported and enabled my career. I am looking forward to spending quality time with our youngest two boys as they complete college, and to stepping into the role of grandparent as our family continues to grow and we welcome grandchildren. But first, Donna and I plan to spend an extended holiday on the Amalfi Coast, somewhere we’ve only ever dreamed of going.

Hoppin’ across the North Island, our Hot Cross Bun Ice Cream Truck has been asking the question, where do you draw the line when it comes to how you enjoy your hot cross buns? Is lightly toasted with lashings of butter the only way to enjoy or are you willing to push the boundaries and enter uncharted flavour territory? Our Woolworths food truck is serving up hot cross bun ice cream sandwiches accompanied with a range of sweet and savoury toppings so we could really find out where people draw the line. Plus, it’s guilt free as we have partnered with KidsCan Charitable Trust to offer a gold coin donation with all proceeds going to their amazing work! We’re proud to have donated $100,000 to Te Tāpui Atawhai - Auckland City Mission - Te Tāpui Atawhai in 2023, an incredible organisation dedicated to providing immediate relief and long-term well-being for Aucklanders. In 2022-23 the Mission’s Food Security and Distribution Team provided over 50,000 food parcels to individuals and whānau in need. Their efforts to rescue unsaleable food from our stores contributes significantly to these food parcels, accounting for over 60% of bakery items distributed to whānau each week. We’re proud to partner with Auckland City Mission and provide them with funding so they can continue in their journey responding to poverty in Auckland. Last Friday was a fantastic day as we opened our first Mini Woolies at Sommerville Special School in Panmure. Mini Woolies is a unique educational programme created by Woolworths which offers students with disabilities a hands-on learning experiences where they can practise new skills in a safe and comfortable environment. It provides a learning space that mimics a supermarket and supports young people to develop their confidence and independence as they prepare for future experiences in the wider community. Our Managing Director, Spencer Sonn, joined Sommerville’s Principal, Belinda Johnston, today to cut the ribbon at Sommerville Special School. We're thrilled to bring Mini Woolies to New Zealand. ✨ Ellen Read #Woolworths #Inclusion #MiniWoolies #Supermarket #LearningInAction #Education

In December and January we were fortunate to help the Kindness Collective Foundation to achieve their goal of supporting families visiting the Christmas Joy store. We donated $20,000 to this amazing cause that supports over 20,000 children and 5,000 families living in poverty with food boxes, presents, treats and more. Our contribution to the collective helps to ensure families in need have a better Christmas. Many whānau came through the Christmas Joy store who live in poverty, hardship and were severely affected by the flooding and Cyclone Gabrielle. The work groups like Kindness Collective do can not be understated and we are so grateful to have been able to support their incredible efforts. Our mission is to provide meaningful and long-lasting support to communities, giving all Kiwis the opportunity to thrive, and helping to build a stronger, healthier New Zealand for future generations. Working with amazing groups like Kindness Collective allows us to be there for our whānau across Aotearoa. Gordon Harcourt Anahita Oei #NewZealand  #WoolworthsNZ #NGO #Community

💜 Celebrating the incredible women in Woolworths New Zealand this International Women’s Day 💜 This year’s theme ‘Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress’ is an opportunity for us to pause and reflect on the women who have paved the way for future generations, encouraged women to speak aloud, challenge biases and overcome obstacles. To commemorate this important date in our calendars, we hosted the fantastic team at She Sharp. Our own Kathryn Byrne spoke about the female trailblazers in the tech space who have influenced her. This event gave us the chance to reflect on the progress and commitment to gender equity in our business and to recognise the incredible women who work with us. Creating better experiences for a better tomorrow is at the heart of everything we do, and to us this means creating an inclusive and equitable workplace where every single team member has the same opportunities to grow and be themselves regardless of their age, sexuality, ethnicity, experience or family situation.  To the 11,298 women in our business, today is about you - thank you for everything you do to make us better together for a better tomorrow. In our ongoing celebration of Pride Month, our team in the Tauranga region recently hit the streets to participate in the festivities of Tauranga Moana Pride Picnic! 🌈 It was an awesome experience soaking up the atmosphere, especially with our new Proud marquee towering proudly overhead. We were also lucky to witness an amazing performance by 'The Queens of Drag', led by none other than the winner of Ru Paul’s Drag Race 2021, Kita Mean! It was a pleasure to be a part of such a worthy cause. We’ve been working together to help feed New Zealanders in need for more than 10 years, making sure foodbanks are well stocked through fundraising, food donations, and partnering on The Foodbank Project. Anahita Oei Gordon Harcourt Spencer Sonn Ellen Read

We have really been blessed over the past few months with corporate appeals that have benefited The Salvation Army and the whanau we journey with. The Woolworths Christmas Appeal raised $414,000 with customers donating $214,000 matched by a corporate donation of $200,000. We say a big thank you to Woolworths New Zealand and in particular to the staff of the nearly 200 local Woolworths stores for the part they played in raising this money. Woolworths NZ also makes food rescue donations to our foodbanks amounting to several million dollars per year. Thank you to all our partners for all the work they do to support our mahi around Aotearoa New Zealand.
