Responsible Sourcing Policy for tuna caught in the PNG waters
About us
The FIA association and the PNG fishery includes onshore processing plants in Papua New Guinea (PNG), supported by PNG-flagged vessels and locally-based foreign fishing vessels. The PNG Fishing Industry Association launched in 2017 their Responsible Sourcing Policy (RSP) which includes 5 pillars: marine litter & fishing gear (ghost) management practices, crew welfare & labor onboard improvement, full traceability of the fishing operation & transparency, the sustainability of the PNG fisheries recognized by MSC and support of small & artisanal fisheries. FIA obtained the MSC certification of the tuna fish swimming in the PNG Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and Archipelagic Waters (AW) in May 2020. According to the last tuna fish landing report from the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) in 2018, 395.000 MT of tuna fish were landed in the ports of Wewak, Lae, Mandag, and Rabaul in Papua New Guinea, making PNG the second biggest tuna hub in the Pacific Ocean. FIA has developed a strategic plan (5 years) to ensure the alignment with the SDGs applicable for the tuna fish operation and also to improve the responsible management of the fisheries in order to ensure food security for the next generation and local labor for Papua New Guinea.

Our COO Marcelo Hidalgo is in Boston, joining an insightful workshop where experts will delve into the critical challenges and innovative solutions surrounding the implementation of worker voice on fishing vessels led by LRQA. As the seafood industry evolves, leveraging satellite internet constellation technology to increase connectivity at sea has become essential for ensuring the well-being and rights of crew members. The agenda includes introductions to current programs and future aspirations, followed by strategic discussions in breakout groups to identify success factors. The workshop will conclude with collaborative insights from the breakout sessions and an action plan for the next steps. We are proud to be part of Coalition for Fisheries Transparency and welcome to Natural Justice to amplify accountability and transparency in the global fisheries industry
Natural Justice is proud to join Coalition for Fisheries Transparency (CFT) as an affiliate! 🌊 In this advisory role, one of our core goals for the coming years is to support meaningful progress in fisheries transparency. By bringing our legal perspective, we aim to provide guidance to the CFT and its members that advocate for government adoption of stronger fisheries policies through 10 transparency principles of the Global Charter for Fisheries Transparency: https://lnkd.in/eGx7YqYZ. The Global Charter is a set of policy measures that address a lack of transparency in vessel information, fishing activity, and fisheries governance and management to combat illegal fishing and prevent human rights and labor abuses from happening at sea. We look forward to working together to advance/accelerate fisheries transparency and accountability in fisheries governance and management. 🤝🐟 #FisheriesTransparency #SustainableFisheries

Chief Operating Officer at FIA Papua New Guinea | Seafoodmatter Founder & Director | Aquaculture & Fishery advisor
Thank you SeafoodSource, for the coverage Crew Welfare due diligence deserves. I am delighted to read the discussion with FISH Standard for Crew about the PNG Fishing Industry Association Social Accountability on board white paper. There are several tools and instruments to monitor and report Decent working and living conditions onboard, such as government inspections, ratification ILOC 188 – PSMA – STCW-F – FAO; management system implementation based on due diligence, independent third-party certifications, releasing of VMS, worker voice and grievance mechanism, and remediation programs. We, at PNG Fishing Industry Association developed an assurance model where we used and implemented several of these tools.
