Ammonia-fuelled vessels: a reality in 2025 🌊 Exciting news for the marine industry! As a zero-carbon fuel, ammonia is set to play a key role in reducing carbon emissions. 🌱 With the marine sector contributing nearly 3% of global emissions, the shift towards low-carbon fuels is crucial. Alfa Laval, in partnership with Swiss engine designer WinGD Ltd., is leading the way. It’s Climate Week NYC and Alfa Laval is there for the second year in a row, along with business leaders, political figures, community activists, and citizens from around the globe to highlight climate actions worldwide that are contributing to the transition toward a sustainable future. 🌎 🌱 Financing is a huge topic as financial institutions claim there is money, but industry often faces a lack in funding when it’s time to make final decisions to invest. This is one of the major roadblocks to why the energy transition is not happening as fast as it needs to. 💡🔋 On top of it all, actions are needed to tackle many of the current challenges we are facing globally, such as driving energy efficiency, nourishing a growing population, rethinking water usage and shifting to fossil-free fuels to drive decarbonization. 💧🌱 Our presence here at Climate Week NYC gives us a chance to be a part of the solution. ⏱️🤖 How Alfa Laval saved 2,600 hours for employees using AI Can workflow automation reduce inefficient processes and increase productivity and quality? That question was raised by employees in Alfa Laval distribution centres, and Thamon Benjapongsapun, Project Manager Digital, Alfa Laval, undertook the project to identify whether AI could be utilized to automize a number of processes in the customer service system. 📨 In 2023, Alfa Laval customer service teams in the distribution centres received some 203,000 tickets in the customer service system. The tickets covered a wide range of topics – including order status, quote requests, export control, shipping instructions and certificate requests. 📋 Around 2,600 hours were spent on reading tickets and assigning them to the correct sub teams. Since early 2024, an Alfa Laval pilot team located in Denmark has received AI workflow support with this task. When a ticket is received, AI summarizes the content of the ticket, categorizes it and sends the ticket to the relevant sub team. After a successful pilot, the solution is now being implemented across distribution centres. 🌍 “Employees focus on more value-added activities instead, since they don’t have to assign tickets manually. Tickets are therefore answered faster, which gives a better customer experience, and we’ve noticed that team spirit has really improved. In 2021, 47 percent of the world’s total sunflower oil production came from Ukraine. It was vital to the country’s economy and agriculture before Russia’s invasion. To try to rebuild that business, Alfa Laval will deliver a new sunflower oil processing line to the Ukrainian company LLC Orilskyi Obyednanyi Elevator, with support from the Ukraine Rebuilding Scheme by the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark, EIFO. “The new sunflower oil processing line from Alfa Laval demonstrates a big leap forward, although small in the bigger scheme of things," says Lars Dithmer, President Business Unit Food Systems, Alfa Laval. “It will bring far-reaching benefits as the oil can be distributed not only to the domestic market but also through exports which will generate additional income for the country.” In addition, Alfa Laval is broadening its wastewater treatment activities across Ukraine, and discussions with EIFO are underway to see how Alfa Laval can best advance future contributions. Road travel, flights, and marine shipping account for nearly a quarter of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, according to the International Energy Agency. Biofuels and low-carbon fuels offer a necessary solution to keeping transportation effective while reducing emissions in line with net zero ambitions. 🌍🌱 Several biofuel alternatives are already available, including fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). We know that biofuels are crucial in decarbonizing our societies, as they provide a low-carbon solution that can be used in existing technologies. Shipping accounts for almost 3 percent of global carbon emissions, so helping this industry move towards biofuels will have a significant impact. With only slight, if any, modifications of the existing equipment needed, the shift can start today.
