  • #UPDATE Thailand: Indigenous struggle against unjust forest and land policies Following the peaceful demonstrations, the Assembly of Communities Living with Forests has secured a crucial commitment from Deputy Prime Minister Prasert Chantraruangthong, who pledged to present their demands to the Cabinet. The commitments obtained by the Indigenous Peoples 👇🏾 🔴Revision of the conservation decree that has led to evictions and restrictions against Indigenous Peoples in national parks and protected areas. ⚪️Put an immediate hold on the planned designation of 23 new protected forest areas, ensuring that affected communities will have a say in the process. 🔵Establish a joint committee to reassess policies under the National Land Policy Committee (NLC) 🔴Expedite the appointment of representatives from community organizations and civil society representatives to coordinate efforts for the recognition of community land titles ⚪️Accelerate nationality verification for 480,000 stateless individuals 🔵Begin addressing land dispute cases, expressing support for legislative measures that would provide legal protection for affected communities. ✊🏾Determined to ensure the government follows through on its commitments, Indigenous Peoples have vowed to maintain their presence at the provincial hall until the Cabinet decision is made.

#Thailand 🇹🇭 | For a law that truly recognizes the rights of the Indigenous Peoples of Thailand to lands and resources! Since March 24, over 5,000 Indigenous representatives have been holding a peaceful camp outside the Chiang Mai city hall building, demanding the full recognition of their collective rights in the final deliberation of the Indigenous Peoples Bill by the Senate. 🔴 Why is this happening?  The current draft does not recognize Indigenous Peoples' genuine access to rights for managing land and resources according to their customary practices, but according to national laws. The draft law doesn’t even include the term “Indigenous Peoples” but “Ethnic Group”. 🔴 What do they want?  - A full recognition as Indigenous Peoples - Amendments to forestry laws that affect Indigenous Peoples and communities living in forests 🔴 What are the authorities doing?  The Deputy Prime Minister has committed to come for the negotiations on March 29 and will present the proposal at the Cabinet meeting on April 1. 📸 IMPECT
