A significant milestone for Rwanda’s #CarbonMarket! Today, GGGI Rwanda and the Government of Rwanda through the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) launched a two-years project to enhance #Rwanda’s readiness to participate meaningfully and equitably in international carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The project launch follows the establishment of Rwanda’s National Carbon Market Framework in 2023 aimed at catalyzing Rwanda’s participation in international carbon markets and to comply with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The framework’s operationalization has been limited due to low awareness of opportunities linked to carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement by public and private actors, and capacity gaps of key stakeholders to effectively engage in carbon markets. Moreover, operationalization of the framework has been constrained by the need to enhance the current pipeline of mitigation activities to facilitate high-quality carbon transactions. Speaking at the event, Ms. Caroline Raes, GGGI Country Representative in Rwanda, reiterated GGGI’s commitment to working closely with REMA and all stakeholders to ensure that Rwanda minimizes the risks and maximizes the opportunities linked to Article 6 of the Paris Agreement to meet its development and climate goals. She noted, “We are now starting a new chapter of our collaboration with the Government of Rwanda, specifically focusing on supporting the operationalization of Rwanda’s carbon market framework and enhancing the country’s readiness to fully take advantage of opportunities linked to international carbon markets under Art 6 of the Paris Agreement." The Deputy Director-General of Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), Mr. Faustin Munyazikwiye, emphasized the importance of collaboration, innovation, and shared responsibility in shaping a low-carbon economy. “Today marks a significant milestone in Rwanda's journey toward establishing a robust carbon market that aligns with our commitment to sustainable development and climate resilience.” The project will support the operationalization of Rwanda’s National Carbon Market Framework through a combination of the following interventions: 🔷 Awareness raising and capacity building of public and private stakeholders to engage in Article 6 cooperative approaches on an equitable basis. 🔷 Governance frameworks and institutional capacity building rules, modalities, and procedures for carbon market participation. 🔷 Provision of technical support in the development of a pipeline of high-quality carbon reduction projects across key sectors, such as agriculture, forestry, energy, transport, and waste. 🔷 Multi-directional knowledge sharing to enhance stakeholders’ awareness and confidence to create opportunities for dialogue with potential buyers. #CarbonMarketRW, #RwandaArticle6 #GreenGrowth, #GreenRwanda. Another inspiring story from our GGGI Rwanda alumni network! Today, we're featuring Joy Amata! During her internship from February to July 2024, Joy played a vital role in driving the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning agenda for our flagship Waste to Resources project funded by the Government of #Luxembourg. Fast forward to today, and Joy is leveraging those skills as an Environmental Expert at the Private Sector Federation (PSF) in Rwanda, coordinating e-waste and plastic waste management projects. Joy shares, "Working on the Waste to Resources project gave me an understanding of the policy landscape surrounding waste management and circular economic approaches, which continues to be highly relevant in my current role." 🌿 Warm congratulations to our incredible Teams! 🌿 We are thrilled to celebrate the outstanding teams and staff across Africa who were recognized during the Global Green Growth Institute (#GGGI) 2025 Spring Annual Staff Meeting last week! These Awards celebrate not just hard work and excellence: it is a celebration of our shared commitment to advancing and accelerating the transition to an inclusive, sustainable and green growth across the continent. 🌿 Our Team in GGGI Burkina Faso won Gold for GGGI’s Most Impactful Outcome, achieved through the “Building Resilience in the Kaya-Dori axis in Burkina Faso”. This Project, funded by Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) focuses on a holistic triple nexus approach (Humanitarian-Development-Peace) for the development of a humanitarian and peace intervention model that integrates conflict sensitivity principles as well as those of green growth as part of efforts to strengthen climate resilience for communities in conflict zones. 🌲 The “Agroforestry for People, Peace and Prosperity in Southern #Ethiopia’s Coffee Growing Region” Project won the Global Green Growth Institute in Ethiopia a Silver Award for the Most Impactful Outcome. The project, implemented from June 2022 to December 2024 and funded by Korea Forest Service has planted 1.8+ million agro-forestry trees to restore 1,368 hectares of land, and contributed to improving livelihoods for 100,000+ people in #Ethiopia. 🌊 ♒ GGGI Sénégal won Silver for the Most Innovative Deal thanks to the Solar-Powered Irrigation for Climate-Smart Agriculture in the Senegal River Valley. The Project, funded by Qatar Fund for Development, works to establish climate resilient irrigation infrastructures to ensure that water is delivered to farmers’ fields through 1.5-Megawatt of solar-powered systems and introduce smart agriculture practices that will help to increase the rice productivity by 50% and farmer’s income by 10% whilst minimizing pumping losses and salinization of soils. 💚 👏 Other African Awardees include our immediate former Regional Director Dr. Malle Fofana (The Most Inspiring Manager for 2024), our current Regional Director Katerina Syngellakis (Outstanding Service Record) and Juvenal Mukurarinda, MSc, CDPM®, the Sustainable Waste Management Senior Officer for GGGI in Rwanda as the Best Project Manager. 🎇 A huge congratulations to all the award winners for their outstanding performance and dedication to GGGI’s Mission. Your passion for green growth and demonstrated commitment to excellence and innovation in green growth has set a powerful example for all of us! 🌍👏 #GreenGrowth #Sustainability #TeamExcellence #Innovation #GGGIAwards

At GGGI Rwanda, we're not just shaping a greener future for the nation, we're investing in the next generation of sustainability and climate leaders! We believe in empowering young leaders by immersing them in transformational initiatives, from green policy development to tangible projects on the ground. As part of celebrating international #Womensmonth, we are spotlighting some of our incredible former female interns who gained invaluable hands-on experience contributing to impactful green growth projects. Sylvie NYIRAHIRWA ,MSc joined GGGI Rwanda as an intern between July – December 2022. She brought passion and dedication to our team, supporting a project to enhance energy efficiency in non-residential buildings. This enabled her to contribute her skills while also learning. Sylvie is applying the skills and experience she acquired in her current role as an Energy Economist at the Rwanda Ministry of Infrastructure(MININFRA) particularly in project monitoring and the development of policies, strategies, and guidelines for the energy sector. She shares “My internship at GGGI was a truly transformative experience. It deepened my understanding of sustainable energy solutions and gave me hands-on experience with challenges in energy efficiency.” Stay tuned as we share more inspiring stories of #GGGIAlumni. #GreenGrowth #GreenRwanda #IWD2025 #EmpowerHer #AccelerateAction GGGI Africa Global Green Growth Institute
