Happy Lunar New Year from Seoul, Republic of Korea! 🎉 As we celebrate the Lunar New Year, or Seollal in Korea, I extend my heartfelt wishes for a prosperous and joyful 2025, the Year of the Snake, to all our families and friends. At Global Green Growth Institute, we are also looking forward to an exciting year, with a diverse set of priorities, including a focus on the potential of #AI for #ClimateAction. We are committed to being at the forefront of piloting technology-driven solutions to develop AI systems that support green growth for our Member States. In 2025, GGGI will build on the momentum from #COP29, where we signed the COP29 Declaration on Green Digital Action, one of the 14 key priorities of the COP Presidency. Recently, I had the privilege of welcoming Mr. Dohyun Kang, Vice Minister of Science and ICT, to discuss opportunities for collaboration on digital and AI technologies between the Ministry and GGGI. I also met with Mr. Byung-Seon Jeong, President of the Korea Institute of S&T Evaluation and Planning, to explore strategic approaches for integrating AI into organizational infrastructure. Together, we emphasized the critical importance of mobilizing public-private partnership (PPP) schemes to expand AI solutions, working closely with Korean and global stakeholders. Looking ahead, I am excited to participate in the AI Action Summit in France on February 10 and 11. We've got #ExcitingNews: Join us in welcoming Katerina Syngellakis, the new Regional Director and Head of Program for GGGI Africa! Katerina brings over two decades of professional experience in the development sector, including strategic planning, resource mobilization, and project development and implementation. Previously, Katerina served as GGGI’s Director for GGGI Pacific and Country Representative for Fiji, GGGI Vanuatu, Kiribati, Tonga and Papua New Guinea (PNG). She joined Global Green Growth Institute (#GGGI) nine years ago, where she spearheaded the creation of the GGGI Pacific Regional Office and successfully secured resources for regional programs on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) implementation and #ClimateFinance, while growing the Pacific operations to 14 countries and over 80 staff with offices in eight Pacific countries. Katerina started as the Regional Director for Africa on January 20, 2025, and takes over from Dr. Malle Fofana who has moved to Asia as the GGGI Asia Regional Director. A committed champion of green growth, Katerina has demonstrated interest in the cross-disciplinary application of clean energy technologies for greener cities, low carbon transport, community development, improved livelihoods, and building resilience to climate change. Under her leadership, we are so excited to continue supporting Africa’s transition to a green, low carbon, more resilient, inclusive and sustainable development. At the Global Green Growth Institute, every Wednesday we host "Green Talks" — a 30-minute internal #communication session where colleagues from across the globe come together to share #knowledge, #updates, and #insights. It's a platform where we exchange project insights, our conference engagements, flagship publications, regional initiatives, lessons learnt, and also the work of our #interns. Our interns participate, sharing their unique #youth perspectives and learnings, which adds a refreshing viewpoint to our discussions. "Green Talks" serves as a crucial space for us to celebrate achievements, seek innovative solutions, and learn from each other's experiences. It strengthens our commitment to knowledge sharing, enabling us to collaborate more effectively across our 49 Member States 29 Partner Countries. As I am in my third week in the role of Director-General, I am already appreciative of the opportunity to listen and learn from these valuable sessions. They remind me of the power of #collaboration, #communication and #KnowledgeSharing in advancing #greengrowth, and I'm excited to be part of this. 🌏 Did you know? Methane has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) that’s 28-36 times higher than CO₂ over 100 years, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report.  Recognizing the urgency, #GGGI has launched the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation for Methane Mitigation (AKCMM) project at an event in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Funded by the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Fund (AKCF), this project is the first under the Partnership for ASEAN-ROK Methane Action (PARMA). I had the great honor of meeting with H.E. Ban Ki-moon, President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of #GGGI, as well as the Eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations. We discussed the urgency of #climateaction and the important role GGGI must play in driving #greengrowth during these times of uncertainty. H.E. Ban Ki-moon’s leadership and dedication to global sustainability have been a source of inspiration for so many, myself included. His supportive words as I embark on this journey as Director-General of GGGI mean a great deal to me, offering encouragement and guidance as we work together to navigate today’s pressing challenges. To echo his powerful words, “There is no Planet B, and so there cannot be a Plan B.” This reinforces the importance of GGGI’s mission and the urgency with which we must act to ensure a sustainable, green future for all. As we look ahead, I am committed to leading #GGGI in accelerating transformative #solutions and fostering global #collaboration to address the climate crisis.
