Our Professor Isak Svensson predicts who could be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on 11 October. Here is his list of six worthy and possible recipients of this year’s price: ☮️ The Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, for standing up for international humanitarian law in armed conflicts. ☮️ The International Court of Justice (ICJ), for its crucial role in international law. ☮️ A shared prize between the Israeli organization B-Tselem and the Palestinian Al Haq for their many years of commitment to peace in the Middle East. ☮️ A shared prize between Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg, Irish diplomat and UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Anti-Terrorism Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, and the organization Campaign to Stop Killer Robots for putting the need for international rules on autonomous weapons on the international agenda. ☮️ Sudan Resistance Committees for their grassroots efforts to create a peaceful and democratic Sudan and to assist those in need in the ongoing civil war. ☮️ Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, South Africa, for efforts to broker the agreement that ended the Tigray war in Ethiopia. More detailed motivations can be found in Isak’s column in Utrikesmagasinet (in Swedish). 👉https://lnkd.in/dy9M_BHT What is your prediction?

Om oss
Peace and Conflict Research is a young discipline at Uppsala University. The Department was established in 1971 to conduct research and offers courses in peace and conflict studies. Peace and conflict research is multidisciplinary and the Department recruits researchers from disciplines such as sociology, psychology and political science. The Dag Hammarskjöld chair of peace and conflict research – the first of its kind in Sweden – was created in 1985 and by that time the Department begun to develop complete educational programs. Today some 80 persons are employed by the Department, which means that it has developed into one of the largest research environments at the faculty of Social Science at Uppsala University. In addition, the Department offers educational programs for some 300 students at the Bachelor, Master and Doctoral level, as well as commissioned training and dialogue programs.

One of our PhD students, Juan Diego Duque-Salazar, recently participated in the ICLD Local Democracy Talk in Umeå. In his talk, he explored challenges related to women’s political participation. He addressed the prevailing gender disparities in political campaigns in Colombia and the many obstacles women face in pursuing a political career. Juan Diego also presented research on women’s experiences of violence during political campaigns. He found that while several political actors are involved, the largest actors responsible are political parties and unsatisfied voters. The Talk was organized by the ICLD network for Gender Equality and Umeå Municipality. It was part of a week where municipalities from Colombia, Guatemala, and Sweden, all part of the Gender Equality Network, gathered in Umeå, Sweden, to prepare for their upcoming municipal partnership application. 🚂 Did you know that a trio of our researchers have written a book called Brain Train about how journeys by train present opportunities for work that requires special focus? 💡 The concept of the book was born following our decision in 2018 to halve our aviation emissions over a five-year period as well as a project to create better environments for in-depth work. 👉 You can read more about the book by Isak Svensson, Desirée Nilsson och Mimmi Söderberg Kovacs in a recent article in the magazine Universitets läraren (in Swedish): https://lnkd.in/dVrfD44Z

What counts as a war must be determined by a global standard rather than the subjective views of different parties, argues Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) project leader Therese Pettersson in a recent article by Sveriges Television (SVT). The globally used UCDP definition of war is “a state-based conflict or dyad which reaches at least 1000 battle-related deaths in a specific calendar year”. Recent statistics suggest that the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah should now be classed as a war. Read the article on the SVT webpage. 👇 https://lnkd.in/dY-caM7V The UCDP list of definitions can be found on our webpage. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dfErFWfP

Today we celebrate the UN International Day of peace. This year’s theme of Cultivating a Culture of Peace is highly relevant to the holistic approach taken by our researchers as they work to identify paths towards durable peace. The year 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. The declaration recognizes that peace “not only is the absence of conflict, but also requires a positive, dynamic participatory process where dialogue is encouraged and conflicts are solved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation.”
