Democracy Reporting International is hosting their third annual DisinfoCon 2024 on September 26th, 2024. This pivotal event will be held both in Berlin and online, offering a forum for civil society, policymakers, journalists, and AI practitioners to engage in a values-based dialogue about the impact of AI on democracy. In this crucial election year, the threat of disinformation remains significant. False information can erode public trust, manipulate voter behavior, and distort democratic processes. As social media and AI technologies advance, disinformation campaigns are becoming increasingly sophisticated, making it vital to distinguish truth from falsehood. DisinfoCon 2024 will explore these challenges and more. Participants will identify new unforeseen issues and discuss practical solutions to safeguard information integrity. The conversation will continue from DisinfoCon 2022 and 2023, now with a focus on the evolving AI landscape and its impact on democracy. Our distinguished speakers include: 1. Brando Benifei, Member of the European Parliament 2. Paula Gori, Secretary General of European Digital Media Observatory 3. Daniel Holznagel, Judge at the Appellate Court of Berlin 4. Brandi Geurkink, Executive Director of Coalition for Independent Tech Research 5. Beatriz Botero Arcila, Assistant Professor at Sciences Po Law School Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with experts and contribute to the discourse on maintaining information integrity in an era of rapid technological change. #DisinfoCon2024 #InformationIntegrity #AI #Democracy #Disinformation #TechEthics #ElectionYear More information here: https://lnkd.in/eEUeHqbD Register here: https://lnkd.in/e-aPxb8H
Global Democracy Coalition
Internationella frågor
A multi-stakeholder alliance committed to advancing and protecting democracy worldwide.
Om oss
The Global Democracy Coalition was formed in October of 2021, convened by International IDEA and other democracy and democracy assistance organizations from around the world. The goal was to create an informal group of organizations committed to the advancement of democracy, working together to engage constructively with the Summit for Democracy, hosted by United States government, in December 2021. Together, partner organizations decided to hold a Forum ahead of the first Summit. The purpose of the Forum was to facilitate a global conversation on democracy to broaden the Summit discussions, providing a multistakeholder platform for voices, actors and issues that were not part of the official Summit. On 7 December, the first Forum brought together 52 democracy organizations across the world, with more than 250 speakers from over 50 countries and various sectors in 41 webinars, which were held over 24 hours and across all time zones, to discuss a variety of issues relevant to the democracy debate. A report summarizing the recommendations to the Summit for Democracy was put together in the 24 hours following the Forum, and handed over to Summit organizers to inform the discussions in the Summit and the year of action. What started as an informal group working together to produce one Forum has evolved into a strategic multi-stakeholder alliance of more than 120 democracy organizations from around the world committed to advance and protect democracy worldwide and to influence the Summits for Democracy and beyond. It provides a platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange and experience-sharing, and advocacy around the Summits for Democracy and beyond. Working collectively on strategic issues relevant to the democracy agenda can contribute to make our individual voices stronger and more likely to be heard.

Yesterday, in partnership with European Democracy Youth Network, we celebrated International Literacy Day, a day dedicated to acknowledging the transformative power of literacy around the globe. Literacy is not just about reading and writing—it's a cornerstone of democracy and essential for informed and active citizenship. In a functioning democracy, literacy empowers individuals to access information, engage in meaningful dialogue, and make informed decisions. It enables people to understand their rights, participate in civic activities, and hold leaders accountable. By fostering literacy, we nurture a more informed society capable of contributing to and sustaining democratic processes. Enhancing literacy is a commitment to strengthening democratic values. As we look back on yesterday’s observance, let’s remember the profound impact that literacy has on our societies. It bridges gaps, fosters inclusion, and supports the development of a more equitable and just world. #ThankYouDemocracy #InternationalLiteracyDay #LiteracyMatters #EducationForAll

In today’s volatile political climate, we've seen a concerning backlash against democracy and democratic ideals. From rising authoritarianism to increasing political polarization, the foundations of democratic governance are under intense pressure. Jonathan Gregory from Diplomatic Courier recently wrote an article, Democracy Under Threat: A Crisis of Confidence, which sheds light on this issue, arguing that democracy is facing significant challenges, it is not in an existential crisis but rather experiencing a temporary decline marked by a crisis of confidence. This is particularly relevant as we witness growing disillusionment with democratic institutions across the globe. The rise of disinformation, threats to individual rights, and the impact of global crises like climate change and pandemics have further eroded trust in democratic systems. However, despite these challenges, democracy’s inherent strengths—such as prosperity, higher living standards, and protection of individual rights—remain crucial in addressing these disruptions. The task now is to reaffirm and demonstrate the value of democracy, evolve our social contract, and restore confidence in democratic governance, which we are aiming to do with our #ThankYouDemocracy campaign. Visit our website for ways to contribute or participate. #PoliticalClimate #CivicEngagement #GlobalGovernance Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/enF3p68b
