Investing in SpaceTech for the benefit of Humanity.
Om oss
Rymdkapital is the Nordics first dedicated Spacetech venture capital firm. We are based in Sweden to fund Nordic and European spacetech companies. Our idea is to invest and connect entrepreneurs with larger-than-life visions, solving real commercial needs as well as some of humanities most pressing challenges - while taking part in the new and fast-growing space economy. The founders we invest in can leverage the support from key industry players to help build start-up companies faster and with less risk from Angel to A-rounds. The team has more than 40 years of experience from space plus 30 years early stage investing in the Nordics and the US. With excellent insights in space industry trends and EU and space agency plans we think we have an enhanced capability to source and select among the category winners in European new space.

Sweden recently published its very first Defense and Security strategy for space, titled "The Role of Space in a new security situation" The strategy defines whole-of-government objectives in safeguarding Swedish space infrastructure serving both civilian and defence objectives. Some parts of the strategy particularly resonate with us, such as the emphasis on strengthening space defense cooperation in the Nordic region and Sweden's involvement in Nato Innovation Fund and SpaceNet (NATO's commercial platform). https://lnkd.in/eHZBmQsN

Filip Kocian 🎗️ have some interesting insights about BlackRock investments in #space, enjoy!
In 2021, BlackRock invested in Astranis, Relativity, Astra, RocketLab, Loft Orbital, Sierra Space, Planet and Ursa Major. While it doesn’t necessarily indicate a major interest of BlackRock in space back then, I think it gives BlackRock a really interesting data access platform. Ultimately, the 8 space bets BlackRock placed in the 2021 investment frenzy were just >7% fraction of their total 122 investments made that year (and more if counting several separate vehicles). So I wouldn’t consider that a high-signal output, space just happened to be a somewhat notable part of the growth/pre-IPO dealflow where part of BlackRock’s mandate lies. That activity level was not necessarily sustainable and some of the partners behind those space investments left for new investment funds. On the investment performance side, as far as I know, they split 50/50 between the ones that appreciated since - and of course the ones that didn’t. Where exactly that leaves BlackRock would depend on the exact deal structure of the investments above - so I don’t want to necessarily imply that BlackRock has done poorly. What I didn’t realize before is that this makes BlackRock certainly in the top space company equity holders (constraining that to startup/new space-ish companies) - I think Softbank, Mubadala and some large SpaceX investors (Google typically) and a few others would compete for the spot, tho BlackRock’s position spreads across more companies than the entities named above. The most interesting potential play for BlackRock here is the data access - thanks to significant stakes, BlackRock now must have an unprecedented pool of proprietary financial and less tangible data insight into privately held companies which are otherwise quite closely guarded. I think this will once again become more interesting as sophisticated investors look to deploy in space (which they absolutely are looking to) - of course investing to maximize returns, but taking into account the value of data platforms for future investments too. I follow SWFs quite closely and this is no different to their playbook in other investment areas - backing top-tier fund managers globally and then subsequently using all the deal and information flows to generate investment opportunities in-house.

Yesterday, Bikini made it to space! And Europe regained its autonomous access. However, the Ariane 6 upper stage faced an anomaly, and the rocket could not launch our capsule in its reentry trajectory. So, while our spacecraft behaved as planned, it is still flying in space attached to the upper stage of Ariane 6: we were not able to perform our atmospheric reentry. What does that mean for The Exploration Company? 1. Most importantly, our strategy and our journey continue as planned. Our next capsule, Mission Possible, is on-track to fly in H1-2025 with SpaceX. And we are in the middle of our Preliminary Design Review with ESA, for our final vehicle Nyx. 2. While we did not gather the expected reentry data, this is not a problem for our next flights. Indeed, we are not using the same thermal protection as Bikini, and we already collected data for our new thermal protection via plasma tests. 3. We have gathered critical learnings: e.g., we have mastered complex manufacturing processes, we have de-risked our supply chain, we have obtained the re-entry license from the government… and we have passed all steps to qualify our capsule and launch it to space. This has trained the team to the utmost level of professionalism and has developed technical assets for our next flights. Of course, we are disappointed that the flight did not happen as expected. We anticipated and accepted this risk. And our team, our investors and our partners know that we did everything we could, to make it a success. So, everyone stays committed to the next steps. I am proud of my team. I am grateful to our investors and our partners for this achievement. The journey continues and we fly our next capsule in a few months!
