🗣️ “The space industry must shift from project-based solutions to more standardized products.” Over the past year, Emil Rönnbäck has served as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Unibap. In this role, he is responsible for finance, investor relations (IR), and talent management. Emil R. brings extensive experience in Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) from several well-regarded companies, including Svea Solar and ArthroCare. 🔷 How does the space industry differ from other fields you have worked in? “The sales cycles in industries such as Unibap's B2B high-tech products are significantly longer in comparison to the more rapid sales cycles typically seen in B2C. "We have a product that takes several years to develop, making its purpose and functionality more critical, as it must remain relevant over time. Market and product development must be approached differently – gathering input from salespeople, monitoring external trends, and staying connected to technological advancements to forecast how we can stay relevant when our products are launched." 🔷 What do you think the space industry can learn from other industries? "Given the urgent need to strengthen Sweden's position in space, the pace of innovation must be rapid, with products that can be quickly adapted for new applications and brought to market swiftly, especially in areas such as sensors and cameras." “The space industry must shift from project-based solutions to more standardized products. Unibap is leading the way in this regard, offering a standard product that can be customized and innovated within. Additionally, selling the same product to many customers essentially means standardization – something "old space" hasn’t embraced.” 🔷 From a commercial perspective, where do you see the space industry in the next 5-10 years? “Firstly, edge computing is already becoming a standard part of satellite design. In the past, sensors were the primary building blocks of a satellite, but now the edge computer is often prioritized alongside the sensors. As commercial players are starting to understand this, edge computers will become more relevant and in demand for all types of satellites, including commercial ones.” “Secondly, the commercial market will shift to being more software-driven, with applications designed to maximize the utilization of sensors during each satellite orbit. Edge computing will play a key role in enabling satellites to support more customers and applications. This will not only benefit end users but also strengthen the business case for satellite service providers, leading to significant growth in the commercial market.” "Thirdly, the European satellite market will continue to grow and may approach the size of the American market, offering exciting new opportunities and developments in the industry." 🔷 Discover Unibap Space Solutions: https://lnkd.in/dsfk67X8 #KnowledgeBites #EdgeComputingInSpace #SatelliteDesign

👋 Meet Gurpreet Kaur, an MSc student in Engineering Physics at Uppsala universitet, who is currently completing her thesis at Unibap. Gurpreet is exploring how satellites can avoid collisions on their own as space becomes increasingly crowded. "With more satellites in orbit than ever before, space debris has become a critical challenge. Today, satellites rely on ground-based tracking to predict and avoid collisions. However, as space becomes more congested, this will no longer be sufficient. Future satellites must navigate autonomously, detecting and avoiding potential collisions in real time." "For my master’s thesis, I am conducting a design study on an automated collision detection and avoidance system for self-driving satellites. My research explores how these satellites can use onboard automation to navigate safely through space debris, ensuring safer and more sustainable space operations." 🛰️ Why did you decide to focus your thesis on this topic? “With the increasing number of satellite launches, space debris is becoming a major threat to future missions. Traditional tracking methods will soon be insufficient, and we need autonomous systems that can predict and prevent collisions in real time. The opportunity to tackle a real-world challenge at the intersection of automation, space sustainability, and advanced technology made this an exciting and meaningful research path for me.” 🛰️ What have you been working on recently? "Besides my thesis research, I am currently preparing a workshop on March 14, where we will discuss the challenges of space debris and explore both current and future solutions. The workshop will bring together experts, researchers, and space enthusiasts to exchange insights on the future of space sustainability." 🛰️ What are you most looking forward to in the near future? "As I continue my work at Unibap, I’m excited to learn from my colleagues and experts in the field. The intersection of automation and space technology is incredibly exciting, and I look forward to contributing to innovative solutions that will shape the future of space sustainability." 🎆🛰️🎆 Impressive results from RSS-Hydro and D-Orbit demonstrating the ability to run multimission data analysis in orbit on the cloud. In the In-Orbit Demonstration, RSS-Hydro's #FloodSENS app processed #Sentinel data from the devastating Shabelle River flooding in Somalia, 2023. 💡 The novelty? The dataset contained both #SAR and #Optical data, two very different data types that have never been processed in orbit in the same place same time before. This experiment paves the road for exciting applications like data fusion and cloud computing in space. 💻 How was it possible? With the help of our newest iX5 in space, launched with D-Orbit's Endless Sky-mission not more than a month ago. This is just the latest of many Unibap edge computers in use on D-Orbit platforms that together have helped to test close to 50 other software applications in orbit. We look forward to continue supporting D-Orbit with cutting edge compute solutions, and helping our software community to test and evaluate their software products in space!
🚀 HUGE NEWS for Earth Observation! 🚀 We kicked off 2025 with a BANG! Our #SatEO software launched on D-Orbit's cloud infrastructure aboard Space X' s #Transporter12 mission on January 14th! 🎉 In a groundbreaking first, we processed both #optical (European Space Agency - ESA #Sentinel2) and #SAR (European Space Agency - ESA #Sentinel1) images in orbit, directly addressing the devastating #ShabelleRiver flooding in #Somalia (Nov 2023). This #multimission processing on the #cloud, never before achieved in space, generated actionable flood information in minutes! This dramatically reduces #latency for #EOassisted #disaster #alerting & #response. Using preloaded images, this successful #derisking demo is just the beginning! Next up: real-time transmission & processing of raw satellite data, from ANY mission, directly in orbit. The future of #rapid #geospatial #intelligence is closer than you think! #FloodSENS-IOX #docker #ML Thanks to all our amazing #collaborators, #partners, and programs that are supporting us! Special thanks to Luxembourg Space Agency, European Space Agency - ESA & Ben Gaffinet for supporting the initial #FloodSENS development and for their ongoing #support! We also want to thank in particular Viney Jean-Francois Dhiri, Luca Tonini, Pierre-Philippe Mathieu 🚀, James Parr, Bertrand Le Saux & Nicolas Longépé for their continuous #inspiration & support!
