The designers at NextOfKin Creatives aren’t afraid to put skin in the game for issues they feel strongly about. One of those is the wellbeing of Singapore’s seniors, who will make up a quarter of the citizen population by 2030. Ageing is a natural process for all of us, after all. So, it’s in everyone’s best interests for the ecosystem of support to be optimal to seniors’ needs – and their wants. This is what led NextOfKin Creatives to turn their attention to active ageing programmes, where men had been underrepresented despite the wide range of activities offered and the potential benefits to their health and wellbeing. The designers’ had a hypothesis that tapping into memories through culture could be the spark that would entice their participation. They were right, and the Silver Pride Lion Troupe was born! Read more about how NextOfKin Creatives went above and beyond to bring physical activity, social engagement, and enjoyable memories to a group of seniors from Holland Close by heading to bit.ly/pod-noksilverpride. – Organised by the DesignSingapore Council, People of Design celebrates the everyday visionaries who are delivering extraordinary impact through design. Spatial designers Genevieve Ang and Georgina F. take a considered approach to the materials they utilise in their designs. Beauty and meaning are aspects they seek to imbue in the objects and spaces they create through their design practice, STUDIO GIN&G. But their minds are also focused on how they might experiment with materials to elevate the experience of a space and reduce its impact of the environment. Often, that means trying out alternative materials that clients and builders are unfamiliar with. Drawing on their empathy for the challenges faced by suppliers and contractors, as well as the hesitations of clients, Genevieve and Georgina use a collaborative approach to overcoming unknowns. Their spirit of experimentation often inspires other stakeholders in their projects to be bolder with their vision and delivery. You might have seen the results at bar and restaurant FURA (@fura.sg), which has a blue bar countertop made with fragments of recycled glass amalgamated into sheet form, and wall light sculptures constructed by layering with glass offcuts that have been trimmed into organic geometries. Swipe left to read about how curiosity, courage trust, and tenacity help GIN&G to shift expectations and venture into the unknown. – Organised by the DesignSingapore Council, People of Design celebrates the everyday visionaries who are delivering extraordinary impact through design. Print-lovers know there’s something irreplaceable about the multi-sensory experience of a beautifully made book or magazine. It’s one reason why some bookshops survived the digital revolution with their customer bases largely intact. Equally important to the longevity of a store is the curation of the titles and the rapport offered by the bookseller. Basheer Graphic Books has all the puzzle pieces in place thanks to the dedication of its second-generation owner Abdul Nasser. Beyond business considerations, he has nurtured a space where personal connections, discovery, and learning shape creative careers. For Chu Xian Oh, founder of local deep-tech startup Magorium Pte. Ltd., correcting misconceptions about her “plastic roads” is all in a day’s work. Traditional bitumen – the glue that holds together the loose stones in road construction material – is made from crude oil. Magorium’s “NEWBitumen” is made from contaminated plastic waste that cannot otherwise be recycled. The plastic is depolymerised and re-engineered to create bitumen without the need for crude oil (which is an ingredient of plastic) as a primary raw ingredient. That explains why Magorium’s roads are indistinguishable from the norm and hold up just as well – a claim the company is happy to back with a five-year warranty. The “Wellness Kampung” spaces initiated by Dr Wong Sweet Fun resonate with seniors in more ways than one. The Senior Consultant of Geriatric Medicine at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital led the initiative for the development of these community spaces in residential estates as hubs for social gatherings, art activities, exercise sessions, and much more. They are part of a set of strategies for keeping seniors healthy and active. The simple act of hanging artworks by seniors who attend the Wellness Kampung @ 115 Chong Pang fosters community pride. It has also had the unexpected outcome of helping an elderly resident with dementia find his way around the neighbourhood. What is simply a painting to one person can be a significant mental marker to another, showing how certain community interventions can evoke emotional and cultural responses from people. It also shows how our simple, everyday ideas and actions can lead to unexpected but better outcomes.
