COMPOSITE DREAMS: Saab has awarded a contract to Penguin International Limited for the assembly of composite superstructures. Under the agreement, Saab is responsible for the detailed design and production of its proprietary composite panels, while Penguin is responsible for assembling the panels into the complete superstructures at its wholly owned shipyard in Singapore, Penguin Shipyard International. This project is Penguin’s first foray into composite shipbuilding and its first collaboration with Saab.

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Trade & Industry and Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, Republic of Singapore
Had an interesting visit to homegrown marine company, Penguin International Limited and toured their shipyard this morning. Penguin is making waves as one of the world’s largest aluminium shipbuilders and has been future proofing its operations by developing its in-house capabilities for the design, construction, and operation of green vessels. In collaboration with Shell, they launched Singapore’s first fully electric ships, the “Electric Dream” ferries, and worked with Sea Forrest to develop the Penguin Tenaga, our first hybrid-electric ship. Their efforts were buoyed by the Government’s Partnerships for Capability Transformation and Enterprise Financing Scheme-Green, which helps smaller local companies forge partnerships with larger companies and capture growth opportunities in the green economy. As we navigate the winds of the global energy transition, I encourage more companies to tap on these initiatives, accelerate the adoption of sustainable technologies and sail towards a greener horizon. BIG PENGUIN HUGS for Northern Offshore Services for the grand naming ceremony of their first I-Class Crew Transfer Vessel, M/V Impresser, at Donsö, Sweden. Impresser is the FIRST commercial ship in the world to be fitted with Volvo Penta's IPS Professional Platform, powered by IPS40 drives. Volvo Penta's IPS Professional Platform is unique because it is a truly compact, efficient and modular hybrid-electric platform that enables Impresser to be easily converted from diesel to hybrid to full electric propulsion. Beyond the innovative propulsion train, Impresser itself is based on a brand new CTV design that was developed in-house by NOS, with Penguin as the supporting builder and Incat Crowther UK as the supporting designer. This new 34m platform offers world-class endurance, fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. Special shout out to our project partners Danfoss and Razor Blunt Labs.

On 15 January 2024, our customer Penguin International Limited (Penguin) delivered their 100th newbuild vessel powered by Cat® C32 ACERT main propulsion engines and Cat C4.4 auxiliary generators. Christened PELICAN BREEZE, this milestone vessel is a 40m aluminium multi-role FLEX-40SC MAX crewboat. Penguin's FLEX series of crewboats are well known in the offshore and maritime security industries for their speed, comfort and endurance. "Back in 2014, almost two decades after we built our first ship, we took our first step with Caterpillar and Tractors Singapore with our first Cat C32-powered vessel, which was only our 95th newbuild at the time," said Penguin's Managing Director, Mr James Tham. "Today, just one decade later, we are celebrating the delivery of Penguin's 100th newbuild powered by Cat C32 main engines." "This milestone is as much a testimony to the quality and reliability of Caterpillar's products as it is an endorsement of Caterpillar and the authorised Cat dealer for Singapore, Tractors Singapore, as a purveyor of world-class customer service," Mr Tham said. Commenting at the milestone event, Mr Alan Ow, Managing Director of Tractors Singapore Limited, said, "Congratulations to Penguin on this milestone, which also attests to the growing market demand for your world-class vessels. We value your continued trust in Tractors Singapore through the years, and we look forward to more collaborations as we strive towards a more sustainable world.” Together with Cat Marine, we are honoured to be a part of this celebratory milestone and Penguin’s growth journey, and we look forward to powering our relationship to ever greater heights. #TractorsSingapore

WE'RE LIVIN' THE ELECTRIC DREAM: On 2 January 2024, Penguin International Limited in Singapore brought fully online its Electric Dream project, which comprises three pure electric ferries, three rapid shore chargers and three autonomous charging jibs. Electric Dream is a private commuter ferry service that shuttles more than 3,000 passengers a day, at speeds of up to 21 knots, between Pasir Panjang Ferry Terminal and Shell's Energy and Chemicals Park on the island of Pulau Bukom. During peak-hour runs, the rapid DC shore chargers take less than 8 minutes to recharge the 1.2 MWh batteries by 400 kWh per ferry. That's 3C charging at sea in real life! Earlier in 2023, Penguin commissioned Singapore's first pure electric seagoing ship, Penguin Refresh - the first of three 200-pax Electric Dream ferries - which has since been joined by sister vessels, Penguin Recharge and Penguin Renewable. Electric Dream will eliminate more than 6,000 tons of CO2 annually from the skies over Singapore. That is the yearly emission from three conventional ferries plying the same route. Penguin is the turnkey designer, builder, owner and operator of the Electric Dream ferries and charging infrastructure. Special thanks to our client-partner Shell Singapore Pte Ltd, and to our project partners Incat Crowther, Razor Blunt Labs, Danfoss, Zinus AS and Gema Engineering. Last April, in a speech at the unveiling event of Penguin Refresh on Pulau Bukom, Penguin's Executive Chairman Jeffrey Hing said, "This project presented itself as a bold challenge against all that was conventional and comfortable in our local maritime industry." "For us, this was going to be our most substantial and most profound investment ever in a single project." Electric Dream was privately conceptualised and privately funded. It was a labour of love and pain, faith and doubt, hope and disappointment. Above all, it was a collective endeavour powered by a shared vision of like-minded journey mates.
