Founder & Director of Perennial HR - HR Executive Search in Asia I post on Career Advice, Hiring Advice & Leadership

Think specialising in a career early on is key to success? Think again. This week I listened to a fascinating podcast that took a scientific look at high performance in sports and business. What they found was intriguing: the biggest predictors of future success were not early specialisation, but rather a variety of experiences across different sports or functions. Additionally, the highest performers had one or two growth spurts in their careers, often during periods of experimentation and embracing failure. 💡 This insight got me thinking about HR careers. After interviewing thousands of HR professionals, I’ve noticed that those who accelerate their careers tend to have experienced some of the following: → Participating in Management Associate programs at large MNCs, gaining cross functional and geographical experience before choosing HR. → Leading large cross functional projects early on, often before they were 100% ready, dealing with change management and influencing senior stakeholders. → Solving business problems, like relocating to regions facing leadership issues, driving real impact. → Experimenting with new initiatives in HR that create measurable business outcomes. → Stepping outside traditional HR roles to lead specialist functions globally or even managing P&L's of business units. So the next time someone offer you an unexpected career move or project you feel is out of your comfort zone Embrace the journey, because the path to success is not a straight line. It’s a series of growth spurts, each one fuelled by curiosity and resilience and not been scared to fail. What unique experiences have shaped your career?
