“Nobody could have imagined this kind of active leadership role of women in Somalia a decade ago. Conflict resolution, dispute handling, clan conflict negotiations, it was all men’s jobs before,” says Fatuma Ali Iman. “Now, as part of the Peace Working Group, young and old women, representatives of youth, the internally displaced, and minority groups all comfortably sit down together with men in equal capacity and play an active role in handling disputes.” https://lnkd.in/dNjkXvFx UNDP UNDP in the Arab States region UNDP in Europe and Central Asia UNDP RBAS Petrit Skenderi Zaynab Elsawi

Better policing in Somalia Somalia is advancing its security infrastructure with a strong team of 23 MOBILE TRAINERS who will soon visit across the country to equip over 500 police officers with critical skills! Just last week, the Ministry of Internal Security of Hirshabelle State, with support from UNDP Somalia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, celebrated the graduation of 23 trainers in a rigorous Training of Trainers (TOT) course. This mobile trainers’ squad will strengthen the Somali Police Force at both federal and state levels, enhancing local security for Somali communities. These trainers will impart crucial skills, including: Police ethics & station management Human rights principles Sexual & gender-based violence (SGBV) Preventing child recruitment This initiative is crucial in building a safer, more resilient Somalia, where police forces are empowered to protect with integrity and respect. #CommunityPolicing #CapacityBuilding #HumanRights #EmpoweringCommunities Petrit Skenderi Henrik Lycke Kamal Raj Sigdel Ahmed Mohamed Omar

😍 This remote district of #Somalia is a powerful 💪 example of the #HumanitarianDevelopmentPeaceNexus (#HDPNexus) in action. History shows, humanitarian aid alone can hardly bring lasting peace and make crisis-affected nations self-reliant. Any crisis response must target long-term development: creating jobs, building infrastructure, and fostering stability. As United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said ... humanitarian response, sustainable development, and sustaining peace are “three sides of the same triangle:” Magaaladan fog ee Soomaaliya, waxaan ku aragnaa tusaale awood leh oo ka mid ah Is-kuxirgka-Gargaarka-Horumarka-Nabadeynta (HDPNexus) oo shaqeynaya. Bilyan lagu bixiyo kaliya gargaarka bini’aadantinimo ma gaarsiinayo dalalka ay dhibaatadu xooggan ay saameysay inay isku filnaadaan. Halkii diiradda la saari lahaa taageerada ama maalgelinta horumarka waara sida abuurista shaqooyin, dhisidda kaabayaal, iyo xoojinta xasilloonida. Habkani waa mid lagama maarmaan ah si gargaarka degdegga ah loogu beddelo korriin waarta iyo adkeysi. My recent visit to Hudur, South West Somalia, with our Regional Director Marina Walter revealed the resilience, tenacity and forward-looking spirit of the Somali people. We, at UNDP Somalia, are encouraged by the determination and engagement of Somalis who refuse the status quo and we will continue to work at full capacity alongside the federal and state governments of Somalia and our international partners towards a peaceful and prosperous Somalia. UNDP Somalia proudly supported UDHAN – Youth with Disability Organization in hosting an event to mark World Sight Day and International White Cane Day. This gathering brought together youth, government officials, civil society, and the private sector to raise awareness of the challenges faced by individuals with visual impairments in mobility, education, and employment, while also celebrating their achievements. Our support to this event aligns with ongoing efforts under the Capacity Development and Empowerment for Persons with Disabilities project, aimed at addressing stigma and discrimination at all levels, and advocating for systemic change. As part of the Disability Inclusion in Somalia: Leveraging Digital and Multi-stakeholder Engagement Project, UNDP has: Empowered 10 Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) to design and implement tailored projects in rural areas. Trained media organizations in Puntland to develop inclusive, disability-focused content and campaigns. Established Somalia’s first Digital Disability Lab, providing access to assistive technology, Braille printers, and connectivity to bridge the digital divide. Enhanced the Shaqooabuur platform with inclusive features to connect youth with employment and training opportunities. Together, we are fostering a more inclusive Somalia where individuals with disabilities can thrive and contribute meaningfully. Notably, with the funding from KSrelief, UNDP Somalia is also implementing another broader project to build capacity and empower the Persons with Disabilities in Somalia. In Somalia, Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) have found a powerful platform to amplify their voices through #Kalamaan, a popular radio program broadcast daily from Mogadishu's Kulmiye Radio. Harnessing the power of poetry, Kalamaan reaches thousands on a daily basis —including government officials, marginalized communities, PwDs, civil society organizations, the private sector, and media outlets—raising awareness and combating stigma and discrimination against PwDs. "Funded by KSrelief, this initiative is part of a bigger project to empower PWDs in Somalia. This is a significant step towards building an inclusive and equitable society," said Mohamed Jama, Chair of National Disability Agency, Somalia. 👏 Tune in and support: Kulmiye Radio #DisabilityRights #InclusiveSociety #Somalia Radio Program: https://lnkd.in/gyQMPthK Radio Station: https://lnkd.in/gHZc8Gu6 Ahmed Mohamed Omar Petrit Skenderi Henrik Lycke Maha Abusamra Kamal Raj Sigdel
