I’m honored to announce that I have been recognized as one of the 2024 Women of the Future 50 Rising Stars in ESG! The Women of the Future 50 Rising Stars in ESG celebrates talented female trailblazers aged 35 and under worldwide who are leaders in ESG. This initiative showcases 50 rising stars annually, acknowledging their significant positive impact on organizations, the environment, and society. I am deeply thankful for the support from my family, friends, The Equity Initiative and Atlantic Fellows, supervisors, and colleagues throughout my 7-year career journey within the UN and venture capital. Being surrounded by an inspiring and authentic community, I feel truly blessed. Receiving this award at the beginning of my journey as a Columbia | SIPA MPA student and as the only listee from Indonesia has reignited my passion and commitment for delving deeper in ESG and sustainability practices. In addition to the Solver Award from MIT Solve, Medibot received the Health Equity Innovation Award supported by the Johnson & Johnson Foundation! Our Founder and Director Chi Ling Chan is in New York City to present to an audience of 200+ philanthropists, global leaders, and investors during the Solve Challenge Finals. On August 28th, I submitted my thesis for my second master's degree in Medical Anthropology at University of Oxford . In this research, I employed an anthropological approach to unpack the discourses shaping the construction of Indonesian higher education institutions’ student suicide as represented in online news media and peer-reviewed journal articles. Previously, 5 years ago, for my first master's degree in Social Health Psychology at Unika Atma Jaya , I also focused on the topic of student suicide, stigma, and help-seeking behavior in Jakarta. University student suicide in Indonesia is a topic that is personally close to me. Delving into this topic since founding Into The Light Indonesia (Yayasan Insan Teman Langit) in 2013 and continuing to collaborate with various stakeholders, including involving students with extraordinary energy, has been a unique pleasure with all its challenges. Today, on World Suicide Prevention Day, I dedicate this thesis to all individuals, particularly students in Indonesia, who are affected by suicide and still have to struggle to be genuinely heard, just to get proper support, just to have more empathetic gestures from professionals and religious leaders, just to be meaningfully involved in research, advocacy, and efforts that potentially alter their lives. It is my aspiration that the incremental contribution to knowledge presented in this thesis may serve as a catalyst for more inclusive understanding and suicide prevention strategies that prioritize the needs of those affected. Thank you to all faculty, particularly my supervisor, and peers who have supported me and shaped me throughout this one-year dissertation writing process. It feels so short yet deeply meaningful, intellectually, emotionally, personally, professionally, and in so many other aspects of life. I will always remember how lucky and privileged I am to know all of you. Many thanks to Chevening Awards for its generous support from the beginning until the end of my study. Also, thank you to Atlantic Fellows not only for the support throughout my study here in Oxford but also for connecting me to learn from other fellows from other parts of the world while I am staying here and working on my study. Discussing #climatechange impacts in #SoutheastAsia and there’s so much to unpack but very little time. Highlighted 3 areas that I thought was worthy of attention. First, #planetaryhealth 🌎:The interconnectedness between human well-being and the environment cannot be overstated. In Southeast Asia, climate change is a threat multiplier-threatening biodiversity, food security, and public health. Rising temperatures alone could expose 90 million people to higher risks of diseases like dengue and malaria by 2050. We need holistic approaches that protect both ecosystems and human health simultaneously. Last year at #COP28, for the first time there was a Declaration of Climate & Health and exciting to pay attention to developments in this space. Next, opportunities within the #carbonmarkets space. While they offer a promising tool to reduce emissions, current carbon pricing mechanisms need to be more ambitious and inclusive. Perhaps a hybrid of voluntary and compliance markets is essential. Voluntary markets play a critical role in catalyzing corporate responsibility and innovation, while compliance markets provide regulatory teeth to ensure long-term reductions. Southeast Asia needs to embrace both systems to scale up ambition and drive measurable results. Governments need to establish clear regulatory frameworks to prevent greenwashing and drive real emission reductions. Global cooperation is key to making carbon markets effective across borders. There are exciting plans from the #ASEAN private sector on this front more details to come. Already we have started taking action by launching the Malaysia Carbon Market Association at the Malaysia Carbon Market Forum. Beyond these, we must also address disaster resilience. Southeast Asia is already experiencing more frequent typhoons, floods, and droughts, with annual economic losses expected to reach $160 billion by 2030. Super typhoon Yagi wreaked havoc in Vietnam recently where 250 people lost their lives, thousands injured and billions in damages. Investing in climate adaptation—especially for vulnerable communities—is crucial to addressing these impacts. Policy integration, finance, and regional collaboration must align if we are to tackle this multifaceted challenge. Climate change is not an isolated problem, and it requires solutions that span health, economics, and environmental justice.
