How can Trinidad and Tobago stay ahead in the global petrochemical industry? This morning, Dr. Vernon Paltoo, President of National Energy, addressed this question during the panel discussion "Navigating the Energy Transition – Strategies for a Sustainable Future" at the 2025 World Petrochemical Conference. He spoke on the future of low-carbon methanol and ammonia production in Trinidad and Tobago, which is key to keeping the country’s petrochemical industry competitive worldwide, highlighting key points: ✅ Natural gas will continue to be an important part of Trinidad and Tobago's petrochemical industry for decades to come. ✅ Producing lower-carbon methanol and ammonia with green hydrogen and Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) will keep our industry competitive as global markets change. ✅ Trinidad and Tobago is making progress toward a lower carbon petrochemical industry with the Green Hydrogen Demonstration Project and the Wind Resource Assessment Project, carried out by the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, with National Energy taking the lead. Dr. Paltoo explained how these innovations will strengthen the country’s position in the global energy market, supporting sustainability, growth, and innovation as the industry evolves. The panelists also shared how industries and countries can adapt to the changing energy world and work towards a low-carbon future. The event is being held from March 17th to 21st in Houston, Texas.
