Urban Laboratory

Про нас

METALAB is an urban laboratory that supports a socially equal, spatially comfortable, culturally rich, environmentally responsible, and economically balanced environment. For over five years, METALAB has interacted with communities through participatory practices, organizing City Scanning Session urban festivals, and doing research and projects in circular economy, urban planning, spatial analysis, product design, and public spaces and infrastructure development. Also, since 2017, METALAB has been building up the Parasolka makerspace. It’s a platform for education, experimentation, prototyping, and sharing knowledge on production with sustainability in mind. After the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, METALAB, together with the Urban Curators, launched СO-HATY, an initiative to create affordable housing for IDPs. In this project, the team renovates abandoned buildings to provide comfortable accommodation and further integration to people forced to flee their homes due to war. The CO-HATY project has been awarded a Bronze Award at the prestigious World Habitat Awards, recognizing its innovative approach to providing shelter for internally displaced people (IDPs) in Ukraine. In 2022, METALAB also became one of the implementing partners of "New economy of Ivano-Frankivsk (NEF) — support for new innovative clusters of economic activity in Ivano-Frankivsk” funded by the European Union as a part of the “Mayors for Economic Growth” program. In this project, METALAB leads capacity building on sustainable construction and product design, as well as makerspace development.

2024 #WorldHabitatAwards winner CO-HATY Charity Foundation (Ukraine) is moving beyond the provision of emergency shelters. It is now creating a new social housing model for Ukraine that will provide permanent and affordable housing. In partnership with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, it is working on: • Two new state-owned social housing projects in Shypynky (Vinnytsia region) and Horodok (Khmelnytskyi region) • An affordable housing pilot in Kalush (Ivano-Frankivsk region). To bring these projects to life, they are actively seeking industry professionals as potential partners. “As a visiting communications officer from IM in Sweden, I was really impressed by seeing and talking to staff at Metalab. First and foremost of course, it is highly important to see that the funds we contribute to Metalab are well used (and they really are), but also to experience that resilience, that stubbornness to continue to work, plan, organize and really dig in to do good things. Assisting internally displaced people with new housing - a new life in dignity — has been our common goal, and through passion, dedication and professional skill Metalab is doing exactly that. Impressed and moved — I thank you!” This feedback was written to us by Erik Törner, a representative of our Swedish partners IM Swedish Development Partner. We are sincerely happy when international partners visit us and can see with their own eyes the war-life balance in which we create CO-HATY and other projects. Thank you, Erik! 📷: Yuliia Rusylo, Erik Törner

The Circular[x]Change conference on circular construction and design practices took place in Copenhagen. Our Anna Dobrova joined and spoke about sustainable practices in various METALAB projects. 🌱 One of our goals is to emphasize that sustainability in Ukraine is not just a trend but a necessity in the critical circumstances of war. We implement eco-friendly solutions to save resources by finding ways to reuse materials, such as construction waste from buildings destroyed by shelling and used windows & doors donated by European partners. 🌱 Nevertheless, sustainability in design and construction is a deliberate choice. It's often easier to buy something new than to find a solution to reuse something used. We're increasingly applying the principles of the circular economy and explaining its value to people. For instance, we're sharing with the CO-HATY residents why reused doors are cooler than new ones :) So, such meetings and conversations with organizations that share our values and understand the challenges are really inspiring and help us move forward.

We are proud to mark a significant milestone for our team, Ivano-Frankivsk and Ukraine, with the opening of POLE, Research and Product Design Center, on 12 July. This achievement is a culmination of our hard work, vision, and partnership. POLE marks the realization of METALAB's long-term vision, evolving over the past decade from periodic workshops and the makerspace to comprehensive center for development and innovation. Today, we are becoming a full-fledged center for development and innovation. METALAB co-founder Anna Pashynska expressed her joy, saying, "More than the opening of POLE, I am excited about the fact that we will be here every day, see each other, and work with each other." That is why we thank all our guests for sharing this special day with us and participating in the workshops at POLE. We also thank the residents who are already starting work in their spaces. We are excited to embark on this new chapter for us. POLE is a project of the METALAB urban laboratory. It was possible through cooperation with international organizations and programs, such as USAID, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, IM Swedish Development Partner, Distributed Design Platform, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, The Charitable Foundation ROKADA and strategic cooperation with the Promprylad Innovation Center. Our project has received comprehensive support and funding within the New Economy of Ivano-Frankivsk project, financed by the European Union as part of the Mayors for Economic Growth Facility programme. On June 20, Ljubljana hosted a conference for members of the LINA European Architecture Platform community. METALAB participated for the first time, and our Anna Dobrova presented it. The participants discussed non-standard architectural cases and ways to develop the platform together. LINA is a European network of architectural institutions: museums, festivals, public organizations, and educational institutions. The main goal is to share experiences and decide together where to move architecture as a profession and culture. Currently, there are 35 members in the network, and only METALAB represents Ukraine. This is a valuable opportunity for us to stay updated on trends in European architecture development and discuss the needs and challenges Ukraine faces amid full-scale war. Such conferences are always an opportunity for networking and new collaborations that could turn into long-lasting partnerships. LINA also holds an annual open call for young talents. We've had the chance to meet creative and energetic individuals eager to collaborate with METALAB and share their vision. "It was important to me that we, a non-governmental organization without sustainable funding from the state and the program (like many institutions in the network), implement exciting projects that showcase our values. I found it interesting to talk with representatives from Balkan countries and learn about their experiences with post-war recovery. Despite our different contexts, their stories give us hope," Anna shared her impressions. We hope to share more about LINA projects and partnerships in the future. 🤍

What was 2023 all about for METALAB? Yes, this is our June publication about the annual report for the previous year, which we posted on the website 😅 The second year of a full-scale war in Ukraine, the development of СO-HATY, preparations for the rebranding of POLE, awards, and nominations. These are facts and numbers, along with statements from the community - the people who implement these projects. A lot about our values and plans. Some might say our report can be read like a book 🙂 You can check it out by following the link: https://bit.ly/4cbY14y

So proud! Anna Pashynska presented METALAB, in particular СO-HATY, at Ukraine Recovery Conference #URC2024 in Berlin. Her presentation sparked an interesting discussion about the role of civil society organizations in Ukraine's further recovery and the opportunities and advantages the civic sector offers: flexibility, innovation, and scalable approaches. We have always viewed the purpose of our work not as providing point solutions to individual challenges but as facilitating communities that share our values. We would like to see more projects in Ukraine aimed at developing and utilizing the social and spatial potential of the places we live in. It's another reminder that a society that consists of strong and committed communities will change faster and better.

Recently, our Anna Pashynska spoke at the Inclusive Community Recovery Forum in Kyiv. This forum is a preparatory event before the URC conference in Berlin. It brought together civil servants, representatives of international organizations, NGOs, academia, and media to discuss the lessons and results of the recovery of communities affected by war. We also explored ways to enhance the coordination and coherence of humanitarian assistance in community recovery. Anna Pashynska spoke about the experience of the CO-HATY project and the challenges we face in the field of housing.
