In August, Liberty Ostrava completed the shutdown of all its coke batteries due to financial issues. The company has no plans to restart production in the future, CPT learns. Liberty Ostrava previously operated three coke batteries with a total designed capacity of 1.2 million t per year. Since last Friday, six Panamax shiploads of Indonesian coal have been sold to China for September delivery. Specifically, four lots of 3,800 kcal/kg NAR fuel have changed hands at $50.5-52/t FOB Kalimantan, and a similar product for delivery by geared vessel – at $50.4/t FOB. Another lot of 3,600 kcal/kg NAR brand has been booked at $45/t FOB. Late August has seen an uptick in spot trade of Indonesian coal to China, with demand for cargoes scheduled for delivery in the next two months increasing. By mid-August, Australian coking coal prices have dropped by another $9/t on average week-on-week to hover at $206/t FOB Queensland. Suppliers keep facing pressure from consumers showing no interest in signing new contracts. Having no need in additional volumes so far, most Asian and European steelmakers are not going to place inquiries in the coming weeks. Insiders believe the price downtrend will continue at least until the end of August. Some Indian importers are sending occasional requests for premium brands, but no deals have been heard of, CPT has learnt. Companies are mostly probing sellers for discounts. This year, it is planned to introduce a number of standards to control the quality of coal sold in Poland. Specifically, the maximum permissible sulphur content in thermal brands used for heating purposes will be 1.2%. First of all, such restrictions will affect public utilities and households. As of today, the bulk of Poland’s hard coal contains on average more than 1.3% sulphur. In their turn, Polish trading companies are gradually starting to book coal batches for further sale as they expect demand from end consumers to rise already in the second half of August. Kazakh high-CV sized coal is priced at $160-170/t DAP Poland, CPT has learnt. Market participants are positive about in their outlook for operation ahead of the heating season. By Thursday, European coal indices have gained $4/t on average week-on-week. Batches with delivery in August-October are priced at $116.7-117/t CIF ARA against $112.4-112.9/t CIF last Thursday. In addition to the rollover to the front month on e-platforms, the rise in nominal prices was significantly affected by higher gas quotes. TTF gas prices have added almost EUR 10/MWh w-o-w, reaching EUR 40.3/MWh. The price leap was mainly caused by the escalation of the military conflict in the Middle East. The situation may threaten stability of gas exports from Israel. Although the bulk of the fuel is extracted at Leviathan and Tamar fields, in February the country also started gas production at the Karish North field located on the border between Israel and Lebanon. Besides, there is still a possibility of disruptions in LNG supplies from the US, where the hurricane season continues. Suppliers have successfully raised prices for Russian high-calorific coal in the Turkish outlet once again, CPT is told. In particular, min. 50,000-tonne parcels are on offer at $97-103/t CIF Turkiye, up $8/t week-on-week on average. The price rise has been pushed through in deals. The changes are largely due to extremely restrained spare volumes for prompt shipment. An additional factor is the very tight availability of Colombian fuel. Suppliers believe that the current conditions provide a strong basis for a further price increase...
