"We were motivated by the availability of low-cost air quality monitors, the benefit of real-time monitoring and the availability of data to start our #AirQuality monitoring journey.” In our latest blog, we had the opportunity to speak with Mike Ssebatta from Mukwano Industries U Ltd. about how they’re turning air quality data from our sensors into actionable strategies to reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency. Read our interview to learn more about their commitment to #CleanAir and the initiatives that they're taking to reduce their environmental impact. 🔗 Read more: https://bit.ly/47FYwSY #CleanAir4All #Sustainability
About us
AirQo’s vision is to enhance clean air for all African cities. Our mission is to collect, analyse and forecast air quality data to international standards and work with partners to reduce air pollution and raise awareness of its effects in African cities. We aim at closing gaps in air quality data in Uganda and across all African countries by developing a network of low cost air quality monitors and applying artificial intelligence (AI) to derive insights to inform mitigation actions. Currently AirQo has deployed over 65 air quality monitors across Uganda. Our strength comes from our partnerships with key stakeholders like government, foreign missions, researchers, private sector, schools and communities where together we mitigate actions to improve air quality. Honored to have participated in the Climate & Clean Air Coalition Ministerial 2024 as a full non-state partner at #UNGA. We highlighted the importance of bridging #AirQuality data gaps & enabling access to timely information on #AirPollution through open-access digital platforms to accelerate clean air actions in African cities. We welcome the Africa #CleanAir Programme and are excited to be a strategic partner. Access air quality data here>http://bit.ly/4gC79C2 #ClimateWeekNYC2024!

It was a wrap of our 1st phase of #theCLEANAirProject Stakeholders' Consultation on the Synthesized #Pan-Sectoral #AirQuality Management Recommendations for #Lagos State, #Nigeria. Held at the American Corner Ikeja on Thursday, September 19, 2024, a diverse and pan-sectoral mid- to top career #stakeholders relevant to #airquality in #Lagos deliberated on the synthesis and co-created #evidence-informed recommendations. Funded by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs, led by AirQo and Rose Alani - PhD, the EUEPiN Project in collaboration with the Environmental Evidence Synthesis and Knowledge Translation Research Cluster (EESKT)-TCEBCEM University of Lagos was given the mandate to develop the air quality management recommendations for #Lagos State. 🚨Excited to share our paper showing links between #AirPollution and #respiratory #health in Kampala, Uganda. Key highlights: ✍ Air pollution impacted healthcare facility outpatient visits and admissions. ✍ Meteorological conditions (temperature, humidity and precipitation) were also linked with healthcare facility visits and admissions. ✍ Daily and annual mean pollution (PM2.5) concentrations were over 5 and 12 times higher than daily and annual WHO recommended averages. ✍ Careful use of calibrated low-cost air monitoring may be useful for air pollution epidemiological research. 📢 Implications of our study for policy and practice ➡ Our findings can inform 🏥 healthcare facilities on resource planning, including beds, staff, and equipment, to manage air pollution-related surges in patient demand. ➡ Evidence could be used to advocate for routine measurement and interventions to improve air quality. ➡ Evidence can be used to raise awareness and empower communities to reduce air pollution exposure. ➡ Accessible air quality data can help people, especially those with pre-existing conditions, avoid high-exposure activities and locations. We are excited to join Cycling out of Poverty (CooP-Africa) for the #JinjaCarFreeDay on September 22nd. For just a day, motorists will be encouraged to leave their cars at home as this event aims to encourage people to embrace non-motorised transport that is associated with less #airpollution and better health. #sustainablemobility #cleanair4all

🚨Glad to share our paper showing #AirPollution trends in Ugandan cities and how weather patterns affect them. Key takeaways; ✍️ Low-cost sensors can close the current air quality data gap especially in resource-limited cities ✍️ Air pollution varies by location, making local data essential for better health and environmental strategies and policies ✍️ Even smaller cities experience high levels of air pollution. ✍️ Weather patterns influence air pollution therefore monitoring/assessing local weather patterns is useful. 📌We need to use #data to inform decision-making 📊 It's time to use #AirQuality data for public health action.
