#EndingPoverty In Uganda, about 21 percent of the population (nearly 10 million people) live below the poverty line, unable to access the basic needs of life. Breaking free from the poverty cycle, especially in rural areas, is difficult because of limited economic opportunities and social services. Empowering young people to choose a poverty-free destiny is at the centre of our work. This is one way we aim to set the present young generation, and millions to come in future, free from poverty. We know that when incomes improve, households can undertake more investments, access better social services, and live dignified lives. We are guiding the youth to: 💰 Acquire vocational and agribusiness skills 💰 Develop business plans and establish viable businesses 💰 Learn from young entrepreneurs through peer-to-peer mentorship 💰 Access youth-friendly financial products #PovertyDay We are a consortium of three partners: Action 4 Health Uganda Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung (HRNS) and Siemens Stiftung. The program unites the expertise, networks and resources of three local organizations; Action 4 Health Uganda (A4HU), Hanns R. Today, we join the rest of the world to commemorate the #InternationalDayofRuralWomen. We celebrate the hard work, tenacity, and resourcefulness of rural women and girls because they mostly bear the biggest burden of challenges of living in rural areas. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by poverty, climate change, food insecurity, lack of safe water, poor infrastructure, and absence of social services. At TeamUp Uganda, we recognize these challenges and work towards empowering women to participate in development processes and enjoy a better quality of life. Through gender mainstreaming and targeted women empowerment, we are enabling rural women and girls in our target areas to: · Access safe water · access sexual and reproductive health services and products · Access agricultural inputs, finances, and joint markets · Participate in leadership at various levels · Acquire entrepreneurship skills We are happy to see rural women live in violence-free households, start profitable and sustainable businesses, and take up leadership positions in their communities. Today is #InternationalDayoftheGirlChild when we remind ourselves to keep in mind the unique needs and abilities of the girl child both at home and in the work we do. TeamUp Uganda interventions in agriculture, water, and health aim to empower young people, both girls and boys, to define their future. Young girls are especially benefitting from sexual and reproductive health services including sessions on menstrual hygiene and cool parenting dialogues. Young people uniting under Youth Empowerment Centres in Mityana and Kassanda districts are making sanitary pads to make them accessible to every girlchild. Action 4 Health Uganda Hanns R. Our plan for #disabilityinclusion in TeamUp Uganda is leaving no one behind. All key stakeholders at the various levels are getting an opportunity to give their views on ways to empower people with disabilities to participate in and benefit from our interventions in agriculture, water, and health. Thank you Uganda Society for Disabled Children (USDC) for giving technical support on this exciting journey.
Today has been yet another exciting day with the Youth Empowerment Club (YECs) Leaders and the Youth Field farmer Facilitators' that form part of the youth structures under TeamUp Uganda. Excitingly when the youths were asked what their expection was from a disability inclusion training. Eagerly, they highlighted that they needed to understand how people with disabilities can live happy and meaningful lives, How they should treat and care for People with disabilities, how not to leave them behind, How to co-exist and respect rights of persons with disabilities, how they can sensitize fellow youths in the communities on matters of disability inclusion. Amazingly through role plays the youths were able to Identify the barriers to disability inclusion. Simply put ACAP- Attitudes, Communication Accessibility and participation bariers. We are thrilled to be taking this journey of #leavingnoonebehind with this group of brilliant young people. Monica BasemeraElisabeth BiberAction 4 Health UgandaHanns R. Happy Independence Day! #independence The theme for Uganda’s 62nd Independence Day anniversary is: “A recommitment to secure and fortify our destiny.” At TeamUp, we are committed to cross-learning and collaboration aimed at generating integrated systemic change in the agriculture, water, and health sectors in Uganda. We believe that our initiatives in these three sectors will significantly contribute to realizing the country’s population dividend. Through interventions in agribusiness and access to financial services, sexual reproductive health services, and clean water supply, we are securing and fortifying the destiny of young people aged 15-30. Our goal is to motivate young people, who make up more than 70 percent of the population, to shape their future. We empower them to lead healthier lives and attain higher household incomes for sustainable socio-economic transformation. Happy Independence Day! Building capacity for disability inclusion Our team and representatives of local partners are undergoing training in disability inclusion to improve knowledge, capacity, and ability to integrate the needs of persons with disabilities in our programming so that no one is left behind. We have participants working in the current TeamUp Uganda program districts of Mityana and Kassanda, as well as representation from potential replication districts of Nakaseke, Kyegegwa, and Kikuube. Local governments are represented by key leaders of unions of disabled persons and technical officers. The team is learning from the expertise of Uganda Society for Disabled Children (USDC) trainers and the experiences of persons with disabilities with a special focus on: · Understanding disability · International and national legal framework · Key barriers to disability inclusion · Opportunities for disability inclusion · Guidelines for disability inclusion by sector (agriculture, water and health) · Standards for disability inclusion by sector and disability type #impairment #barriers #disability #inclusion Action 4 Health Uganda Hanns R. This ending week, the TeamUp Uganda replication journey took us to Kikuube district, 246 kilometers West of Kampala city. Kikuube’s vision is a vibrant, well-planned, and accommodative model district with a healthy, educated and economically empowered population by 2040. More than 25 percent of the population are refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi and Somalia. We are grateful for the warm reception from the District Chairperson, Mr. Peter Banura, the Chief Administrative Officer, Can Musingye Edward, and the Heads of departments in water, production, and health. We held successful one-on-one and group meetings with the district leadership and representatives of civil society organisations. Key highlights of the district’s development plans are: · Presence of oil and gas in the district · Climate change (Bugoma Natural Forest is located in Kikuube) · High influx of refugees · High concentration of NGOs in refugee settlements leaving other areas underserved. · Unreliable water supply · Teenage pregnancies Our partner, Whave Solutions has been providing water source maintenance services in Kikuube since last year. Our experiences and findings from the three TeamUp potential replication districts (Nakaseke, Kyegegwa and Kikuube) provide a deeper understanding of local capacities, interests, and challenges, which will shape the implementation strategy. 🌱☕ Happy International Coffee Day: Let's cast an eye on the young coffee farmers in Uganda! 🌍 Aligned with this year's International Coffee Day theme, “Embracing collaboration for collective action”, 🤝TeamUp Uganda unites the expertise, networks and resources of three local organizations, Action 4 Health Uganda (A4HU), Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung Africa (HRNS) and Whave Solutions working with young people aged 15 -30 years in the sectors of agriculture, water, health, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) 🚰 in the two districts of Mityana and Kassanda in central Uganda. This years coffee day is special: Coffee farmers in Uganda are thriving with this year bringing the highest prices in 30 years 📈, according to the Uganda Coffee Development Authority. At TeamUp, we're proud to support the youth driving this agricultural success 👩🌾👨🌾. Since 2018, TeamUp has implemented diverse sustainable agricultural practices 🌿to inspire and empower the youth to embrace commercially viable agricultural practices🌾. We are one of the three TeamUp consortium partners with expertise in coffee farming and agribusiness, and have trained youths in appropriate farm and household management strategies, adaptation to climate change, and farmer organizational development through Youth Farmer Field Schools (YFFS) and Youth Empowerment Centers (YECs). 👩🏫💪 As a result, young people have established coffee farms and enjoy improved access to resources and services including land, bulk marketing, value addition and financial services. Overall, more than 30% of TeamUp program participants have reported improvements in their quality of life.😊 TeamUp is a cooperation between Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) Siemens Stiftung Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevoelkerung (DSW) and Hanns R. Today, we join the rest of the world to celebrate International Coffee Day #ICD2024 #EmbracingCollaboration We celebrate the TeamUp Uganda collaboration that is transforming people’s lives by making coffee farming a gainful venture for households. Since 2018, the collaboration of three partners in Uganda Action 4 Health Uganda (A4HU), Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung - HRNS and Whave Solutions under TeamUp Uganda has enabled thousands of young people in Mityana and Kassanda district to acquire knowledge and skills in appropriate farm and household management strategies, and adaptation to climate change. Coffee is our flagship enterprise in the agricultural sector. We have worked with young people aged 15-30 years to establish demonstration gardens with the aim to inspire them to adopt modern agronomical practices that increase farm yields. Our agronomists have supported individual youth and households to embrace coffee farming as a business. As a result, young people have established coffee farms and enjoy improved access to resources and services including land, bulk marketing, value addition and financial services. This year, our celebration is bigger because of the bumper harvest and high prices that have characterised the coffee subsector. According to Uganda Coffee Development Authority, coffee farmers in Uganda are earning the highest prices in 30 years. Because of the higher incomes from coffee, we are witnessing great improvements in the lives of many households participating in the TeamUp program. Overall, more than 30% of TeamUp Uganda program participants have reported improvements in their quality of life.
