About us

Ably provides a suite of APIs to build, extend, and deliver powerful digital experiences in realtime for more than 250 million devices across 80 countries each month. Organizations like HubSpot and Verizon, depend on Ably’s platform to offload the growing complexity of business-critical realtime data synchronization at global scale. Our everyday digital experiences are in the midst of a realtime revolution. Whether attending an event in a virtual venue, receiving realtime financial information, or monitoring live car performance data – consumers simply expect realtime digital experiences as standard. As a result, synchronized data in realtime is business critical for many organizations. But building homegrown realtime synchronization capabilities is complex and costly. Ably simplifies this. In the same way that content delivery networks simplify and underpin large parts of the internet, Ably is the invisible platform and infrastructure layer powering the realtime revolution on a global scale. As the de facto platform for developers at organizations of all sizes, Ably is on track to reach one billion devices per month by 2023.

Today’s fans are global and also, very often, virtual - for example, 99% of NBA fans across the world will probably never set foot in an arena. These trends are driving a shift in not only fan behaviors, but also expectations. Fans engaging in live events virtually, rely on applications to deliver rich realtime experiences. So, for fan-centric businesses to be successful, they need to build or buy the right realtime experience technology. In our recent blog, Ably CEO Matthew O'Riordan explores what a modern realtime experience platform looks like, and outlines the requirements you should look for when making this critical technology choice 👇

Collaborative documents give users a sense of working in a shared environment that makes the experience more immersive and enjoyable. Live cursors play a key role in interactive spaces. So, what are live cursors and why are they useful? Live cursors are the pointer locations of members in a virtual space. They can be useful for showing others what you’re interested in or where you are located in a web page. They’re used in applications such as chat, video editing and google docs. In the third video in our Ably Spaces series, we give you a step by step tutorial on how to create live cursors in just a few lines of code, using the Ably Spaces SDK. The realtime demo shows you just how quickly you can get it set up and highlights useful features such as: ⭐Event listeners ⭐Traffic optimization ⭐Batching So, you can get on with your own projects rather than worrying about how you optimize your collaborative environments

At Ably, latency minimization is baked into everything we do. When a publisher and a subscriber are in different data centers, latency is higher because of the time it takes to transmit data between different points on the globe. In our latest blog post we investigate the potential problem of high latency, highlighting the journey our developers took to understand the cause, and how the lessons we learned along the way helped us to optimize global message transit. When we’re talking about collaborative environments, what do we mean by component locking? And why is it useful? Component locking is the capability to restrict access and editing of a certain element of a page or application to only one user at a time. It’s useful because it avoids: ⭐Undefined behavior ⭐Collisions in data editing ⭐Unexpected results All of which can result in problems after editing. In the final video of our Ably Spaces series we show you how to implement component locking yourself, in just a few lines of code, with the Ably Spaces SDK. We show you, in realtime, how quick and easy it is to define locks and guarantee all lock states are synchronized across all clients. This makes it clear to the end user that someone else is editing and therefore you can’t.

The traditional fan experience is a relic of the past. Today's fans expect to be active participants. They crave connected experiences that deepen their engagement with creators, teams, and fellow fans. This shift is a double-edged sword. For fan-centric businesses, it presents an exciting opportunity to build stronger bonds, unlock revenue streams, and drive innovation. However, scaling these interactive experiences requires careful planning. The wrong architecture can devour profits as you gain more fans - caused by the N-Squared problem. In our recent blog post, Ably CEO and co-founder Matt O’ Riordan talks through how you can use batching - and other architectural patterns - to deliver fan experiences, without sacrificing ROI 👇 https://hubs.la/Q02Fb_sc0
