Non-profit Organizations

Working to increase the number of ethnic minority people who pursue and have successful careers within engineering.

About us

AFBE-UK provides support and promotes higher achievements in Education and Engineering particularly among students and professionals from ethnic minority backgrounds. The proportion of United Kingdom (UK) citizens from ethnic minority communities is projected to reach between 20 and 30 percent by 2050. The UK has a long standing history of engineering achievement. However the UK engineering sector is currently experiencing a shortage of skilled professionals. Only 7.8% of UK engineers from Black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds although an average of 25% of engineering university graduates are from BME backgrounds. AFBE-UK works to increase the number of ethnic minority people who pursue a career and have successful careers within the engineering industry. We promote diversity in engineering and technology through our programmes and activities which are led by exceptional professionals and leaders in the Engineering industry and are designed to bring about meaningful change, sustainable growth and development and a lasting positive impact to the UK. We also welcome professionals that have engineering backgrounds but work in other sectors such as information technology, banking, finance, etc.

  • Hayyaan Bashir, the events of February deeply shook us. The recent riots have underscored similar violent attacks, which are deeply troubling. We are relieved to hear that you are on the path to recovery after experiencing such a horrific incident. It is also heartening to witness the displays of support and solidarity from others. https://lnkd.in/eV5QaiVE

I think now is the right time to talk about something that happened to me back in February. It feels appropriate given everything that’s going on at the moment in the UK. It was a normal day, I was commuting via Glasgow Queen Street Train Station as I had done many times before. I was minding my own business when out of nowhere I felt a splash on the right side of my face. A man, totally unprovoked, had thrown hot tea at me. So many emotions run through your mind in a situation like this. I didn’t actually register it was a hot liquid at first as the burning settled in after a minute or so. Part of me thought it might’ve been acid. I couldn’t see, only him walking away as if he had done nothing. The man was quickly apprehended at the scene and thankfully some brave members of the public grappled him to the floor and stopped him from hurting anyone else. I’ll be forever grateful to the people of Glasgow for stepping in as they have been known to do time and time again in the face of racism, Islamophobia and far right thuggery. Like we are seeing on the streets currently. As for me, I was left disfigured for a couple months. It was a long painful process to get back to normal both mentally and physically. As for the court case he was given a 2 year sentence (not enough I am sure most people would agree). The point of this post isn’t for sympathy. But rather to draw attention to the fact that in the months leading up to what we’re seeing right now, the tension within society has been palpable. A week after my assault, a family friend’s young son was stabbed walking home from the mosque. These weren’t isolated incidents, but rather a symptom of a wider problem. A special shoutout to Aisha Janki Akinola, the last person I expected to see on that day. She was on her way to be on a panel with Ollie Folayan MBE (PhD CEng FIChemE). And without knowing who I was at the time, she jumped in to help tend to my wounds and keep me calm. In a really profound way I feel her selfless act underscores the absurdity of the situation Muslims find ourselves in today. She had told me she had somewhere to be, she was running late, but it was her faith that guided her to help someone in need. This is what being a Muslim is about, not what you see in the media. It’s been frustrating to see legitimacy lended to the riots because ‘they thought he was Muslim’. As if that makes it fair game? How we go from here I don’t know. But what has been encouraging is seeing communities come together to pushback on the dangerous rhetoric. We need more of that.

  • Successful Transition event with AFBE-UK Partner Subsea7 The transition event with Subsea7 provided students with a realistic context to practice and build confidence before entering the industry which will help them identify opportunities and offer a safe space to make mistakes. The event included presentations from the leadership team, a graduate panel, mock interviews, and assessment center tasks. It has been a fantastic partnership between AFBE-UK and Subsea7, our host for this event, allowing students to practice interview skills and learn more about Subsea7, generating excitement about future opportunities like internships and graduate placements. The Transition Programme is a series of dynamic workshops aimed at empowering students, recent graduates, and returners as they embark on their professional journeys.
