Stellantis had invested US$29.5m in Moving Ground Plane (MGP) wind tunnel technology for EVs at its research and technical center in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Mark Champine, senior vice president and head of North America engineering technical centers, said, “That’s what makes this investment so critical. By reducing drag, we improve electric-vehicle range and, ultimately, the overall customer driving experience.” While Stellantis already implements MGP technology at other facilities, those sites are focused on smaller vehicle platforms. The upgraded Auburn Hills facility will be capable of accommodating larger vehicles, particularly the #STLALarge and #STLAFrame platforms. Dynisma states its simulators could save US$10m per development program Simon Holloway, commercial director, said, “Testing in the real world is a vital part of the new vehicle development process, but it is time-consuming, costly and has a significant environmental impact for an automotive OEM. #Dynisma’s #DMG simulators allow car makers to increase the amount of virtual testing – without any compromise for development drivers or engineers – delaying the point at which a physical prototype is required, potentially bringing double-digit million-dollar savings as fewer actual test vehicles are needed." The facility features high-speed motor #dynos and high-power drive unit test rigs – capabilities in high demand from customers in the region.
