Fed Up with Disposable Tech? 🤔 ✈️ We are are back from our half-term trip: I was on the plane, and right in front of me was a dad determined to connect these flashy kids’ headphones. He tried everything… Bluetooth pairing, reading the “manual” on the box - but after several attempts, he just gave up… And you can imagine the kid reaction! 🗑 It reminded me how many cheaply made “tech” products end up in landfills, especially when they’re not designed to be durable or repairable. 🎧 That’s where Kibu’s collaboration with Batch.Works comes in—designing kids’ headphones made from recycled materials and built to be easily repaired. Not only do they keep little ones happy, they also cut down on waste and hassle for parents. It’s a small win for sustainability and a big step away from our disposable tech culture. 🌍 I always love those moments when your PMF (product-market fit) appears in everyday life—like when you see a real pain point and realise there’s a better solution for it! 💵 Retailers Are Paying Billions for Waste - Here’s a Smarter Solution: Marks & Spencer is facing a £40 million annual tax bill under the UK’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme, which forces businesses to cover the costs of household packaging disposal. Across the industry, this will amount to £2 billion in additional costs… On top of that, the UK Plastic Packaging Tax adds a £217.85 per tonne charge for plastic packaging with less than 30% recycled content. 🚨 The message is clear: waste comes with a BIG cost. But what if businesses turned it into a resource instead? 💡 From Cost to Circular Value A recoverable resource that can be designed back into products through circular manufacturing. 🔄  Create Value from Waste: ✅ Recycled plastics → Retail displays, furniture, store fixtures ✅ Old packaging → New branded accessories & merchandise ✅ On-demand manufacturing → No overstock, no waste 💰 The Business Case: Companies that integrate recycled materials into their products can reduce tax liabilities, cut supply chain costs, and open new revenue streams. Instead of spending millions just to comply with regulations, smart businesses are investing in circular solutions that improve margins while aligning with sustainability goals. What opportunities do you see in this space? Happy Monday! Financial Times Batch.Works #CircularEconomy #London #Productdesign #3Dprinting #additivemanufacturing #recycling

🔍 Every Layer Matters. The Smallest Detail Can Make the Biggest Impact. But when you get it right, that’s where the magic happens. One of the biggest misconceptions about 3D printing? That it’s only for prototypes, not high-quality finished products. At Batch.Works, we obsess over the details. A small imperfection in design can ripple into major inefficiencies at scale. That’s why we iterate from ideation to production , ensuring every product is optimised for manufacturing. We often combine 3D printing with post-processing like laser etching & cutting , unlocking a new level of precision, quality, and design possibilities. 🚀 More on this process soon! One Snap = Total Waste. 🎧🚮 A single broken part shouldn’t mean throwing away an entire product. But that’s exactly how our linear system is designed. Make. Use. Bin. Repeat. Take headphones - a hinge snaps, a wire breaks, and suddenly, the whole thing is e-waste. Why? Because they weren’t designed to be repaired. And that’s the real problem. With Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws expanding, brands will soon own the waste they create. But instead of waiting for regulation, why not rethink manufacturing now? 🔄 Kibu is already doing it. Instead of making throwaway products, it’s a modular, repairable headphones. ✅ Fix, don’t replace ✅ No overproduction, no waste ✅ Made locally, when and where needed The time to rethink manufacturing is now... 🤯 The response to the latest post for Batch.Works Layers Decoded series has been incredible. So many great conversations around circular manufacturing, 3D printing, and rethinking how we make things. It’s clear that people are ready for change - ready to move beyond outdated supply chains and start designing for repair, reuse, and smarter production. All the first round of sessions are already fully booked (which I did not expect this fast!). But I’ve set up a link (comment and profile) for anyone who wants to stay updated on future sessions and events. More to come! For now, just a huge thank you to everyone who’s engaged, shared, and supported this so far. Let’s keep pushing the conversation forward. 🔥

China Can’t Compete with Local Manufacturing - Here’s Why 🚀 Their edge is cheaper labor and mass production. But that model is breaking… Local, on-demand manufacturing is proving to be faster, more flexible, and just as cost-effective. Take Kibu: Instead of mass-producing plastic headphones overseas, we’ve partnered with them to manufacture them on-demand, in the UK, using recycled materials. The result? 🚀 No supply chain delays ♻️ No overproduction, no waste 💡 No unnecessary costs - just smart, local manufacturing It’s not just about the cost of a single part. It’s about removing inefficiencies - long shipping times, excess inventory, and rigid production methods. When products are made where they’re needed, when they’re needed, local circular manufacturing isn’t just sustainable - it’s competitive. The future of manufacturing isn’t overseas - it’s right where you need it. A bit like your grocery store… Material: rPLA, TPU Varioshore Process: FDM and laser cutting. This one means a lot… 💫 🎧 Kibu is finally here! Now officially available in the UK. Most kids' headphones are designed to break. Kibu is designed to last. This project has been a long journey! A massive shoutout to Sam Beaney, who has been grinding non-stop to bring Kibu to life. Finessing every details you could ever imagine right from order management automation to how the headphone is built and land in your hands! From winning Design of the Year in The Guardian (thank you, Minnie Moll!), to celebrating our work at the King garden party, to a wild Kickstarter ride just in time for Christmas - it's been one of the most exciting project I’ve ever been involved on. I'm incredibly proud of this partnership and what has been built. Breathing out the circular vision. For too long, kids' electronics have been built to be thrown away. The result? Millions of broken headphones in landfills every year. What if kids could build, repair, and recycle their own headphones? That’s how Kibu Headphones were born. 🎧🚀 Designed by Morrama | Certified B Corp, made by Batch.Works, and now officially available in the UK, Kibu proves that consumer electronics don’t have to be disposable. What makes Kibu different? 🔧 Built by kids – No fiddly wires or screws. A hands-on STEM learning experience. 🛠️ Easily repairable – Break a part? Swap it out. No more throwing away entire headphones. 🌱 Sustainably made – 3D printed in London from recycled PLA. 🔊 Safe for young ears – The Kibu Safety Engine ensures sound never exceeds 85dB, no matter the device. Actually safe… 🎵 Daisy-chainable – Kids can link multiple headphones together for group listening with siblings or friends. At Batch.Works, we’re proud to manufacture Kibu using circular, on-demand production - reducing waste and making sure every product has a second life. And yes, headphones made in LONDON! 🇬🇧 This is just the beginning—keep your eyes peeled! 👀 👉 Check them out now: https://kibu.family/ #KibuFamily #SustainableTech #3DPrinting #STEMEducation #CircularDesign #BuildRepairRecycle #MadeInLondon
