    Thousands of jobs under threat in British Steel closure plans “We understand this is an extremely difficult day for our staff, their families and everyone associated with British Steel. But we believe this is a necessary decision given the hugely challenging circumstances the business faces.” Thousands of jobs are at risk after British Steel unveiled closure proposals, having launched a consultation on the future of its Scunthorpe blast furnaces and steelmaking operations. Bosses say the ventures are “no longer financially sustainable due to highly challenging market conditions, the imposition of tariffs and higher environmental costs”. Operations – which include a rod mill – could close by as early as June 2025, affecting as many as 2700 jobs. Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/eyYkqpWd

  • Partnership to prepare workforce of future “By combining the University of Hull’s academic capabilities with CATCH’s practical, hands-on approach to training, we are setting a new standard for excellence in industrial training.” The University of Hull and training organisation CATCH have joined forces to enhance industry skills and research opportunities in the Humber region. The two organisations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on training, research and workforce development, designed to “bridge the gap” between academic study and industry practice.     Orca cleans up with Millen FM deal “This enables us to have more autonomy over the contracts and also offer a really streamlined approach to all of our customers, providing a wider portfolio of services from under one roof.” Durham-based industrial cleaning company Orca Cleaning Services Ltd, which recently upgraded to a larger facility on Belmont Industrial Estate, has purchased Millen Service UK Ltd (trading as Millen FM) for an undisclosed sum. The deal will enable Orca to broaden its service offerings, complementing its industrial cleaning portfolio with services such as chewing gum removal, high-level cleaning and more, creating new job opportunities.     Eddie becomes Freeman of Hoults Yard “Eddie won’t be able to graze his sheep at the Yard, but the honour of being a Yard Freeman means he can pop in anytime for a pint, a doughnut, a pizza, or a coffee and cake. And if he wants to bring a player or two, then that will be fine too.” Hoults Yard has granted Eddie Howe the title ‘Freeman of Hoults Yard’ following Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup victory. And the business village has also changed its name to ‘Howes Yard’ in the manager’s honour prior to this weekend’s victory parade.
