  • There's just one week to go until the NE1 Business Breakfast. Join us next Tuesday for a morning of informal networking at our March event, held at the Great North Museum: Hancock in the Living Planet gallery.   We’ll be joined by the team from Super League’s 2025 Magic Weekend ahead of the event’s return to the city this May. They'll be sharing all the exciting details about the rugby league tournament, as well as giving you the opportunity to take a photograph with the tournament trophy itself. We’ll also hear from North East Museums following their recent rebrand, along with the NE1 team on the latest city developments.    We look forward to also welcoming Dame Allan's Schools students to our upcoming breakfast who are raising funds to support The Percy Hedley Foundation, the north east charity offering award-winning Disability Awareness Training for businesses and schools. Attendees are encouraged to bring cash and buy a cake (or ten) with all goods on offer made and manned by students.   With over 150 guests registered, it's set to be a busy one, so if you haven't already booked, be sure to book your free place here - https://lnkd.in/eCWCXKmM

  • More great news for the city, as Atom bank, the UK's first app-based bank, announced its headquarters will move to the historic Pattern Shop Newcastle behind Newcastle Central Station.   The move will also create 500 jobs, as the multi-million-pound investment marks a new chapter for the bank, underscoring its commitment to flexible working, innovation, and growth.   Atom’s CEO, Mark Mullen also commented “With its unique character and rich history, it is the perfect place to reimagine what a company headquarters can be. This isn’t just an office - it’s a symbol of who we are as a brand.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eQApFK-S

  • Big news from MIPIM as The Gainford Group has announced a £170mn transformation project set to add to Newcastle’s skyline. The New Bridge Project will see the redevelopment of the former Premier Inn site on New Bridge Street, introducing a 29-storey residential tower with 185 new homes, a 150-bedroom hotel, and new bars, restaurants, and leisure spaces.   This investment builds on the ongoing regeneration of the nearby East Pilgrim Street, which includes major developments such as the new HM Revenue & Customs regional headquarters, Newcastle STACK in Worswick Chambers by the Danieli Group UK, and the five-star Hotel Gotham, signposting a tremendously exciting period of transformation over the coming years for the city.   Read more at: https://lnkd.in/ecfhJMqy (Image: FaulknerBrowns / Gainford Group)

  • NE1 is delighted to be part of High Streets UK, a recently launched pro-business initiative bringing together retail, hospitality, and business leaders representing over 5,000 businesses across the UK to advocate for policies that support the long-term success of city centres. Last week, the group met for the first time to discuss key challenges facing the sector, with a focus on business rates primarily in the inaugural meeting. Following this, the group released a series of policy recommendations, which were informed by insights from its hundreds of member businesses operating on flagship high streets nationwide. We strongly urge the Government to consider these proposed changes to its business rates proposals, which we believe would better reflect the stated objectives of protecting the high street, encouraging investment and creating a fairer system. Yesterday, the team had the opportunity look around the new Dakota Hotels ahead of its opening on Newcastle Quayside later this month – and it exceeded all expectations with its style and attention to detail. Renowned for its impeccable service and sophisticated design, Dakota’s arrival further cements the Quayside’s reputation as a premier destination. With 118 beautifully designed rooms, every element has been thoughtfully curated to deliver a luxury experience that elevates Newcastle’s hospitality scene. Take a look.

  • This morning we had the pleasure of hosting a City Safe Business Breakfast, as we approach the one year anniversary of the initiative, which brings together Northumbria Police, Newcastle City Council and Newcastle NE1 and aims to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour in the heart of Newcastle. At the event at Newcastle Library we heard from David Hall, Assistant Director for Operations at Newcastle City Council, followed by Barrie Joisce, Chief Superintendent and Area Commander for Northumbria Police, who updated us on the scheme's objectives and results so far.   Tariq Albassam, Director of Operations at Newcastle NE1, then shared NE1's role within the initiative and the importance of reporting, which allows the City Safe team to accurately build a picture of the city centre and identify trends. He also spoke about the future ambitions of City Safe, which focus on being relentless in pursuit of keeping our city a safe and welcoming place to live, work and visit. It's incredible to see the success this initiative has already brought in its first year, through increased street patrols, dedicated CCTV coverage, daily problem-solving meetings and focusing on addressing issues that matter to our city's businesses most. We look forward to the further positive impact that City Safe will have on our city. • A huge congratulations go to Sir James Mackey this week following the announcement he takes on the role of interim head of NHS England, leading the organisation through its latest transition.   We were delighted to have him open our NE1 CAN NHS Careers Insight Event last Autumn, where he addressed over 600 young people in attendance, encouraging them to explore the diverse career opportunities within the NHS.   We look forward to seeing the impact of his leadership in the months ahead.
