On 18th August 1940, the Hardest Day of the Battle of Britain was fought in the skies above our country. We remember, with pride and gratitude, Churchill’s Few who flew with skill and courage throughout the Battle of Britain, supported by dedicated crews and operational staff. Congratulations to BIGGIN HILL HERITAGE HANGAR LTD who have just returned their sixteenth Spitfire to the air! MK912 took its maiden post-restoration flight from London Biggin Hill earlier this week; almost nine years to the day since its last flight on 1st August 2015. The aircraft proudly carries the markings of 312 Squadron (Czech) which it wore on D-Day, flown by P/O Miroslav ‘Tony’ Liskutin DFC. He was believed to be the first allied fighter pilot to land in France on 6th June 1944. Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar is home to the largest gathering of Spitfires in the world and is at the forefront of heritage restoration. You can also fly in one of their two-seat Spitfires from the most famous RAF fighter station of World War Two. The prestigious event brought together over 200 industry professionals for an opportunity to meet with Ministers, MPs and other Government officials to demonstrate the value of business aviation in driving economic growth for the UK and Europe. As the providers of the path and gateway to the UK economy, facilitating billions of pounds of inward investment, our industry employs thousands of people, directly and indirectly in the communities where we are located. A new independent economic study, by Lichfields, showcases how far London Biggin Hill Airport has come in the last decade, and its significant role in driving positive economic change, investment and employment. The data highlights that for every 1,000 business air traffic movements, 88 FTE jobs are supported and £6.47 million GVA is generated – injecting tangible benefits into the local and national economies. Congratulations to Bombardier on their record-breaking flight from London Biggin Hill Airport to Montreal, powered by Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)! Did you know, Air bp’s low carbon renewable fuel, which is produced from waste and residue products, provides a lifecycle carbon reduction of around 80% compared to the traditional jet fuel it replaces. This week, we’ve hosted 15 students for our annual work experience week. The initiative aims to inspire local young people by showcasing the diverse career opportunities available here at London Biggin Hill Airport. The students visited several departments to gain hands-on experience in different fields of aviation – including Customer Service, Ground Operations, Rescue & Firefighting and Air Traffic Control. We are passionate about supporting the next generation of aviation professionals by providing them with the tools to unlock their potential. Our work experience opportunity runs during a dedicated week every year, in addition to our two ‘Futures Weeks’ and other initiatives.
