About us
Birmingham Hippodrome is a cultural hub that gives everyone the chance to experience unforgettable theatrical performances, arts and culture. We are an independent not-for-profit cultural charity that reinvests its surpluses into enriching the cultural life of the region. Our vision is a world-class Birmingham cultural scene with the Hippodrome centre stage. Birmingham Hippodrome engages with over 500,000 people each year with world-class performances on our two stages, at our spectacular outdoor events and popular festivals and through our Hippodrome Education Network and other transformational participation projects. Our venue is home to Birmingham Royal Ballet, DanceXchange, OneDanceUK and Dance Hub Birmingham. Run by a board of voluntary trustees, we are an independent charity with no revenue funding from public sources. We frequently invest in projects alongside Arts Council England and with Birmingham City Council. Generous support is received from the business community through sponsorship and other partnerships; from individuals through donations and memberships; and from grant-making trusts for special programming and infrastructure projects. As a major employer in the region, we play a leading role in the Southside Business Improvement District. Register for job vacancy alerts here: https://bit.ly/2QabS6C

Birmingham celebrates Chinese New Year! 🎉 Last weekend, thousands flocked to Southside and beyond for the city’s Chinese New Year Festival, a free family festival co-produced by Birmingham Chinese Festival Committee and Birmingham Hippodrome. The city came alive with lion and dragon processions in partnership with Bullring and Grand Central, pop-up lion dances in The Arcadian and street food, funfair rides and a craft market in Southside. With thrilling performances on the Uber Eats Stage in Hippodrome Square across Sunday. The festival would not have been possible without the support of our incredible sponsors, local businesses, performers and of course, the local Chinese, East and South East Asian communities. A huge thank you to all who made this festival a huge success. The Chinese New Year festival 2025 was proudly sponsored by Uber Eats. Supported by Southside District, The Arcadian, Wing Yip and Brothers Foundation and The Birmingham Chinese School. The Saturday programme was in partnership with Bullring & Grand Central. Brilliant to attend the first ever Theatre Green Book West Midlands event on 24 January, sharing ideas and inspiration on sustainability in the arts with colleagues across the region. Our Head of Risk & Compliance Jenny Wood and Head of Organisational Strategy Jen Burrows spoke on a panel about engaging staff and freelancers in theatre sustainability, sharing insights from our all staff meeting and survey
The Theatre Green Book team were delighted to visit the West Midlands last week for an in-person event. Sometimes there is nothing quite like getting a group of people in a room together, and we hope that relationships formed on the day will continue to flourish. Thanks to our producer Laura Sedgwick, it was a packed schedule full of insights into how theatre makers are using the Theatre Green Book to reduce their environmental impact, as well as wider conversations around embedding sustainability into creative practice. There really was something for everyone; presentation topics included rural touring, quick wins for arts buildings, Theatre Green Book productions, inspiring your workforce, and creative initiatives from young people. With enormous thanks to the Royal Shakespeare Company for hosting us all, and to our speakers from Midlands Arts Centre, Playbox Theatre, Pentabus Theatre Company, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Birmingham Hippodrome, and Wasted Raves. If you are interested in future Theatre Green Book events, please keep an eye on the events page of our website. You could even get started this week, by joining one of our free webinars! https://lnkd.in/e__dkgMz Photographs by Gina Print
