Thank you to Gemma Barnett, Kathryn Seaward (MCIPD) and Vicky Friis for highlighting important messages and what we can all do.
Recent data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) indicates that around 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced some form of domestic abuse since the age of 16. Let that sink in . . . . Domestic abuse doesn’t stay at home, it impacts work too. As employers, we have a duty to support staff facing abuse. With this in mind we jointly hosted a very powerful event with Chambers Wales South East, South West and Mid at our Cardiff office yesterday, one that will stay at the forefront of my mind for a very long time. We were joined by Vale Domestic Abuse Services who shared stories of the survivors they support and the importance of the work they do to support women and children. There is so much more work to be done and as with many other charities, funding is a big challenge. Vicky Friis highlight how important the workplace is for survivors as it provides respite, normality and something that is solely for the survivor without the perpetrator having any form of control. Blake Morgan LLPs Kathryn Seaward (MCIPD) highlighted how to recognise signs of domestic abuse in colleagues and what steps employers can do to support their employees which included: ✅ Clear policies on domestic abuse, including confidentiality and flexible working. ✅ Manager training to recognise signs and offer support. ✅ Confidential resources, such as HR contacts or Employee Assistance Programs. ✅ Workplace safety measures like schedule adjustments or security support. ✅ Paid leave for those needing time to seek safety. And finally, we were joined by an incredible domestic abuse survivor that spoke for the first time about her experience and shared that it was a conversation with a colleague who simply asked “what’s going on in your life” that changed everything for her. I know I speak for everyone in attendance that the courage, bravery and resilience that person has shown has been nothing short of inspirational. A key takeaway for me is that we don’t need to be experts or have all the answers, we just need to be present and LISTEN! Creating a safe, supportive workplace could change or even save a life. Let’s all do our part. Charlotte Archibald Penny Lock Eve Piffaretti Nicole Allen Rachel Evans Dai Rees #WorkplaceSupport #keeptalking #DomesticAbuseAwareness #HR
