This week, our PR Consultants Kerry Ruffle and Peter Remon visited Durham University Business School to catch up with the comms team, discuss PR plans and priorities for the months ahead, and explore their new Waterside Building 📝   “We had the opportunity to catch up with members of Durham’s faculty that we have worked with for many years to share their research and insights with the media, finding out about their latest projects,” says Kerry. “We got to make new connections too, meeting with a number of academics across the School to find out more about their work and expertise. Our day also included meetings with alumni relations and programme leaders, as well as a lovely lunch.”   Thank you to Martin Thomas, Sophie Patterson, Katrina Savage, and the rest of the Durham team for making members of our team feel so welcome! 😊 To find out more about what we do at BlueSky Education, get in touch today! #ClientVisit #BusinessEducation #EducationPR

Have you heard of "newsjacking"? 🗞   Newsjacking refers to leveraging breaking news stories by adding your thoughts, opinions, and expertise 🤔 So, what does this look like and how can it benefit your institution?   We often receive requests from journalists for expert comments on topics such as geopolitical issues or leadership insights. For breaking news stories, journalists may seek a brief comment within a tight timeframe - sometimes as short as one hour. This urgency stems from the need to capture fleeting moments of relevance and public interest.   Although reacting quickly can be challenging, it's worthwhile. Whether a journalist requests a quick call or written input, it’s essential to respond promptly. Such stories can go viral, providing excellent coverage for your school and positioning you as a leading expert in your field 🥇   Want to find out more about newsjacking? One thing we often find in news pieces is an expert opinion that adds variety and supports the article's statements…🧠💬 But, has this expert - or their PR support - capitalised on the news agenda to get there? “Newsjacking” refers to leveraging breaking news stories by adding your thoughts, opinions, and expertise. So, what does this look like, and how can it benefit your institution? Our PR Consultant Georgina Tierney explores how newsjacking can enhance your institution's reputation and position it as a global thought leader. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗷𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 🤩 Consider what’s currently in the news—daily fresh topics and recurring themes like global conflicts, elections, or even Taylor Swift concerts. These stories present endless opportunities, and our PR team excels at finding unique angles. Quick-turnaround commentary can lead to articles, interviews, or podcasts, reinforcing your school’s leadership and expertise. 𝗜𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗷𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮? 🤔 Knowing when not to comment is as important as speaking up. Some topics are sensitive, so recognising when to hold back is key. Effective newsjacking is about choosing the right moments. Consider media training to help your faculty approach press opportunities with confidence and readiness. And of course, we are always happy to help! Dive into Georgina’s blog in our link below!👇 https://lnkd.in/eTeWxEKm #BlueSkyEducation #BusinessEducationPR #EducationPR #Newsjacking

📢 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗦𝗸𝘆 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 📢   This month’s coverage highlights how potential outcomes of the upcoming US election could impact economic policy and income, and international relationships. 📚 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀: 𝗣𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗦 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 This article examines the BRICS summit and pressures on Putin, with insights from Aurelien COLSON of ESSEC Business School and Chris Alden of LSE IDEAS. Should we conclude that Democrats are 'bearish for the dollar'? A study by Imperial College Business School analysed data over a 40-year period which shows that the US dollar appreciated by an average of 4.15% per year during Democratic presidential cycles and depreciated by 1.25% per year on average during Republican cycles. https://lnkd.in/eZQCCkJe 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝘆 𝗮 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗮𝘅-𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 Political polarisation is rising in the US and abroad, intensified by the upcoming presidential election. UK and US culture is pretty similar - whether we are sharing our language, our music or our TV shows - in the grand scheme of things we are pretty similar to our friends across the pond 🇬🇧 🇺🇸 Yet, as someone who has spent a fair amount of time in the United States, one thing us Europeans cannot get our head around is TIPPING CULTURE 💰 💵 Tipping is deeply entrenched into US culture, and recently Trump and Harris were both applauded by workers for agreeing to eliminate taxes on tipped income. 💲 Yet, this universally-liked policy could have worsening long-term effects as it entrenches tipping culture in America even further. Tipping culture, according to research by Gordon Sayre - Professor of Management at emlyon business school, can have huge negative affects for workers, including: - Increase in poor health of workers who rely on tips 🤢 - Increase in overworking of tipped workers, potentially leading to burnout 🥱 - Enabling of sexual harassment of tipped workers 🙅♀️ - Further entrenching racial, gender and sexist discrimination and bias in society 🚫 Read more in this Newsweek opinion piece, about how the increase of tipped work can affect all of these areas: https://lnkd.in/di5txcBf Valérie Jobard Isabelle Huault Matt Symonds Stephanie Mullins-Wiles Katie Hurley MCIPR #TippingCulture #WorkersRights #Trump #Harris #USElection

Is it ever good PR to bad-mouth a competitor? 👀💬 When creating a PR strategy, it’s easy to feel tempted to criticise competitors. This often comes from the belief that customers and resources are limited, making success seem like a zero-sum game where one brand’s gain means another’s loss. However, it’s essential to resist this impulse. In the long run, speaking negatively about competitors can backfire, potentially eroding trust and credibility with your audience rather than strengthening it. ✂️🪢 This approach may cause customers to view your brand as unprofessional or untrustworthy, ultimately harming your reputation and relationship with your consumer base. Our PR Consultant Jamie Hose shares five reasons why it is never good PR for universities and business schools to belittle the competition.
