British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS)
Non-profit Organizations
The Chartered Society for Worker Health Protection
About us
BOHS is a charity that makes a distinct and valuable contribution to preventing ill health. We bring science, technology and forethought to bear on the workplace conditions that can gradually undermine health. We are a learned and professional society that through research and education helps to protect individuals and benefit the public. We are committed to raising awareness of these complex health issues. BOHS publishes the world-renowned, scientific, peer-reviewed journal, Annals of Work Exposures and Health, and we are the only professional society representing qualified occupational hygienists in the UK. Through our Faculty of Occupational Hygiene, we set professional standards and are the only UK examining board for qualifications in occupational hygiene. What is occupational hygiene? Occupational hygienists get involved at the interface of people and their workplaces. They use science and engineering to prevent ill health caused by the work environment - specialising in the assessment and control of risks to health from workplace exposure to hazards. Hygienists help employers and employees to understand these risks and to minimise or eliminate them.

A public hearing will be held in Parliament on Monday, 24 March, examining the legacy of Cape Holdings Ltd and other Cape companies, a leading manufacturer of asbestos products, now owned by Altrad. The hearing follows a legal case in the Supreme Court in 2019, brought by the Asbestos Victims Support Groups’ Forum (“the Forum”), in which Cape was forced to disclose documents which proved that, from the 1960s, Cape deliberately withheld evidence on the risks to life that their asbestos projects posed. David Ellis, Chair of the Asbestos Victims Support Groups Forum UK, said: “For far too long, victims of asbestos exposure have been ignored, and the companies responsible have evaded proper accountability, covering up the role they played in putting many thousands of people at risk. More than 400 people a month are diagnosed with these fatal cancers - companies like Cape made huge profits at the expense of their lives. Cape’s products were used in many buildings, including shops, hospitals and schools and continue to cause fatal illness to the thousands of people exposed to them." The Victims’ Forum is demanding Cape pays £10 million towards research to find a cure for mesothelioma, in recognition of the damage and deliberate cover-ups.

Two years ago BOHS started campaigning to highlight the workplace health inequalities between women and men that sees 16% more women (almost 1 million) than men made ill through work. In November, the Health and Safety Executive finally published gender statistics. Today, in Parliament, the Society of Occupational Medicine and CIPD, together with MPs are highlighting the economic need to prioritise women’s and reproductive health and calling on the Government to: ➡️ Launch a review of women’s & reproductive health in the workplace ➡️ Develop a high-profile campaign to motivate and give confidence to employers to improve practices ➡️ Widen access to occupational health services for those in & out of work #HelpWomenThrive
