Would you like to train to become an IFMGA Mountain Guide? We are extending the deadline for applications to our training scheme to August 31st. This is particularly relevant to keen climbers, alpinists and skiers who are close to completing the pre-requisites for the BMG training scheme. After a snowy late spring there is a record amounts of snow in the Alps, it is boding well for fantastic alpine conditions for the season ahead. If you are considering a rewarding and varied outdoor career, and would like some advice on any potential gaps in your application, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our Technical Director (technicaldirector@bmg.org.uk), who will be able to offer some guidance. We look forward to receiving your applications. Photos: Tim Neill #britishmountainguides https://lnkd.in/ef2cGFK

Congratulations Ross Hewitt
Years on the making, studying conditions and waiting for that day when you have the mental, physical and techical level, the conditions are right, the team is rights. Truely a day in a decade. Pulling of this major first descent off Mont Blanc in a massive savage arena that 2 descents of Route Major and one of the Poire since 1979 was massive!

British Mountain Guides winter training combines two approaches to decision making. Primarily the planning and preparation stage includes making an avalanche forecast then comparing personal observations with formal published avalanche forecasts. A dynamic risk assessment on the mountain may take the form of perception, understanding and prediction ( Endsleys model) to help avoid hazards for example accumulations of windslab.

The British Mountain Guides Scottish Winter Training involves ice and mixed climbing on Ben Nevis and the surrounding area. Trainees plan routes that will be achievable in challenging conditions, this week we experienced fluctuations in avalanche hazard, freezing levels and weather. During their test in March these candidates will be tested to climb grade 5 ice and mixed routes, looking after clients providing a safe and unforgettable experience. We are currently looking for volunteers to join focus groups to help develop a Behavioural Marker System specifically for Mountain Guides… You need to be: 1. A member of the British Mountain Guides or qualified though the BMG training scheme. 2. An IFMGA Mountain Guide and two years post qualification. 2. Available to chat with up to 4 guides online using Microsoft Teams / Zoom. 60-90 minutes max. Still there? A previous study that took place demonstrated that non-technical skills featured heavily alongside the technical skills of guiding, both being required for optimum safe performance. Contact: Wojciech Ambroziak and Parasca Pisten Thank you!! Your expertise matters.
