About us

The British Property Federation is one of the country’s most influential and high profile lobby groups. Representing the property industry – including commercial and residential property owners, investors, developers and their advisers – the BPF works to influence legislation and raise the industry’s profile across all areas of business, politics and the media. We aim to create the conditions in which the property industry can grow and thrive, for the benefit of our members and of the economy as a whole. We do this by engaging with the government and other bodies whose decisions affect the property industry, on things like finance, tax, localism, planning, sustainability and housing policy, to make sure that the industry’s needs and views are taken into account.

Should #realestate care about the Government’s new industrial strategy green paper? I mean, there's no reference to #property without the word “intellectual” before it, a single mention of real estate in a methodological footnote and only one mention of the word buildings. But look a bit closer and it's pretty clear that the property sector is going to be an important part of making this strategy work. It's great to have big aspirations for boosting the life sciences sector, but how is that going to play out if there's a chronic shortage of lab space? Ditto professional and business services, when supply of new and refurbished high quality offices is struggling to keep up with demand. And what about having enough well located homes for workers to live in? The green paper talks about "foundational sectors" - those that "provide critical inputs and infrastructure" to govt’s favoured “growth-driving sectors”. Seems pretty clear to me that the property sector falls in that foundational bucket. There’s more of interest to British Property Federation and UK PropTech Association (UKPA) members: 📝 Reiteration of the need for planning reform that speeds up the consent process 💻 Proptech isn’t specifically mentioned, but clearly falls within the “digital and technologies” sector that govt have identified as having high growth potential 🏬 There’s a whole chapter on “place” and an appreciation of the need for city regions to play an important role in delivering the industrial strategy 📢 Some positive language around ongoing and open dialogue between govt, businesses and experts and providing stable and certain policy direction to support long term investment On the whole, I’d see this as a welcome statement of intent. Delivery, of course, is quite another matter, but it’s helpful to at least see where govt wants to get to.

🥁 Last week, we made two very important announcements...! Jessica Hardman presented the SPF Honorary Lifetime Membership Award to Ken Ross OBE, DL. CEO of Ross Developments and Renewables Ltd, and Miller Mathieson, the former Managing Director of global advisory firm CBRE for Scotland. 🏆   The award recognises the outstanding contributions of the two individuals, both of whom are former SPF chairs, to the work of the federation and the wider real estate industry in Scotland. 🌟 Mr Ross was a driving force behind the establishment of SPF in Scotland in 2006-07. He has since represented the industry on numerous government working groups, including on sustainability, building standards and housing. 🌟 Mr Mathieson was a more recent chair of the organisation. As the former MD of CBRE for Scotland, he is well known across the industry and chaired the SPF between 2018 and 2019. We were thrilled to mark this special celebration with some 400 industry reps at our annual dinner last week, many of whom will know Ken and Miller personally for their significant contributions to the sector. 👏
