🚨 Local government reorganisation (LGR) in Surrey update 🚨 Leaders of all 12 Surrey councils have agreed on the key points of an interim proposal for the county. Ministers say streamlining local government could lead to greater efficiencies, improved service delivery, and economic growth for businesses in the area. So, in February, government asked Surrey to move forward quickly with plans - starting with LGR and how councils operate first, and then looking at further devolution. All Surrey council leaders have worked together in recent weeks to agree key areas of collaboration and principles for reorganisation and devolution. Surrey County Council’s Cabinet are meeting next week (March 18) to agree and submit its interim proposals ahead of the government’s March 21 deadline. District and borough councils in Surrey are also discussing options for reorganisation and will publish their recommendations in due course. But what it will mean for you as a Surrey business? Well, any change is unlikely to come into force for a while - with ministers not making a decision until the autumn and any new unitary councils not coming into being until April 2027. But, if and when that happens, business rates, commercial waste, planning, licensing, environmental health and trading standards could move to newly-created authorities. Devolution could have an even greater impact. Evidence from areas like Greater Manchester and West Midlands shows that handing greater powers to regional leaders can drive growth and strengthen local economies. We'll continue to provide updates as and when they come forward. 🗞️ Read more at the latest piece on our website - https://lnkd.in/e_AiqT3v ❓ View the FAQs on the Surrey County Council website - https://lnkd.in/ebRASJYE #localgov #business #regionaleconomy
