We ensure that governments, schools and teachers have the tools to improve #learning outcomes. The #UKAid funded Leh Wi Lan (Let’s Learn) programme has played an important role in improving the safety of girls in schools across #SierraLeone since 2016. We have helped to strengthen the capacity of the country’s education system at national, district and school levels so that government policies are put into practice. Akuja Mading de Garang MBE, technical leader for our #GirlsEducationSouthSudan programme, recently participated in a panel discussion at USAID's Global Education Conference. She spoke about how GESS used the Washington Group Questions in the school enrolment data and education census to provide the first nationwide data on children with disabilities in South Sudan. This has been a powerful tool for advocacy, identifying more than 20,500 learners with disabilities in mainstream schools who need continued support to complete their education. Akuja was joined by Ben Lou Poggo, Director General for Inclusive Education at the National Ministry of General Education and Instruction (MoGEI); Kudzani Ndlovu, GESS Behaviour Change Communication Lead and Richard Adzei, USAID South Sudan Education and Youth Office Director. The South Sudan government is a key partner for GESS and Ben Lou Poggo explained how this evidence-based approach is supporting policies and a commitment from the National Treasury to ringfence at least 5% of the national education budget for disability inclusion. In 2023, around 250 million children and young people were out of school. For many, formal education is not a feasible option due to the limited capacity of some governments to reach underserved areas, particularly in contexts of emergency and protracted crises, and remote and rural communities. Community-based education generally takes place outside of traditional classroom settings and is run and overseen by local community members, community-based organisations or non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Our USAID funded Play to Learn project aims to increase access to high-quality, equitable, safe, and inclusive #EarlyChildhoodEducation services for children in Djibouti with a special focus on the most marginalised children. Earlier this month, the project’s #BehaviourChangeCommunication activities were launched by the US Embassy in Djibouti, alongside Djibouti's Ministries of Education and Training (MENFOP) and Women's Empowerment and Family (MFF).
