📢The CCSA welcomes the launch of the Independent Review of Greenhouse Gas Removals (GGR), Chaired by Dr Alan Whitehead CBE. 💡Alan brings a wealth of in-depth policy experience from his time as Shadow Minister for Energy and has been a strong advocate for the UK’s low-carbon energy system. The CCSA is encouraged that the Review builds on the ongoing work of the Government to deploy these technologies and will not seek to replicate them – and the industry stands ready to engage with the review. It’s important that the Review does not cause uncertainty for existing investors and developers and should not impact progress in relation to the GGR/Power BECCS business model development and shortlisting of GGR projects for Track-1 expansion. Why is this Review important: 🔹 The Climate Change Committee (CCC) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) both set out that GGRs must play a significant role in supporting the UK’s carbon budgets and reaching net zero 🔹 CCUS enables CO₂ removal through sustainable Bioenergy with CCS (BECCS), Direct Air Capture and Storage (DACS) or Energy From Waste with CCS (WECCS) to permanently remove carbon from the atmosphere, in order to offset remaining residual emissions in the UK 🔹 Through this Review there is an exciting opportunity to showcase the UK’s position as a leader in these technologies, and to attract private investment for GGR deployment 🔹 There is an opportunity to leverage cost reductions that GGR projects can offer and also to enable both compliance and voluntary carbon markets 🔹 The UK benefits from large geological CO2 storage capacity and high-integrity, high-quality GGR credits will be crucial to address residual emissions When will it be published: 🔹 The Review will produce a report with recommendations, that will be submitted to the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero in October 2025 To ensure that the UK retains its position as a global leader in climate action and meet net zero targets, it’s crucial that the Government: 🎯 provides much needed updates on project selection for Track-2, Track-1 expansion, and other CCUS projects capable of deploying on similar timelines 🎯 processes shortlisting of GGR projects as well as the GGR/Power BECCS business models alongside the Review For more information, see here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eAJ8E9Di

In response to reports that British Steel will be closing their blast furnaces at Scunthorpe, the CCSA has provided a statement. We feel that this is a missed opportunity to deploy Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) which could have protected these important jobs and retained UK steel making capabilities. 🔎Earlier this week Sara Price, Head of UK External Affairs; Despoina Tsimprikidou, Policy Officer; Yanxi Z., Policy Officer; and Ethan Drake, Policy Intern; participated at the The Seabed User & Developer Group (SUDG) Parliamentary Reception. 🔹Important discussions were had with stakeholders on the need for collaboration and strategic planning to ensure that the seabed is utilised for energy security in a way that does not inadvertently impact the marine environment. 🔹It was encouraging to hear yet again the Government reaffirm their commitment to CCUS. Minister Hardy, Minister for Water and Flooding, mentioned the role of CCUS in decarbonisation and highlighted the Government’s ambition to reform the planning system to improve marine licensing processes so that projects can move ahead. 💡The CCSA looks forward to continuing to collaborate with the SUDG on the delivery of important energy infrastructure projects. 🎯Ultimately, to deliver energy security, the Government must urgently provide long-awaited updates on project selection for Track-2, Track-1 expansion, and other CCUS projects capable of deploying on similar timelines.

📢 What a great day for CCS in Europe with Final Investment Decisions taken for Northern Lights JV & Stockholm Exergi! We wish to extend our congratulations to our Members TotalEnergies, Equinor, and Shell for all the great work they put into these projects and into making Europe greener. Some key highlights from this pivotal decision: 🔹 Northern Lights will be able to bring its total capacity from 1.5 million tonnes to 5 million tonnes of CO₂ transported and stored in 2028. More info here 👉 https://lnkd.in/e3dh257f 🔹 The construction of Stockholm Exergi will now begin in order for it to become fully operational by 2028. By then, it will be able to capture 800,000 tonnes of CO₂. Read the CCSA statement on the Chancellor’s Spring Statement here 👇 Mark Sommerfeld, UK Director, said: “The Chancellor’s focus in the Spring Statement on delivering economic growth - through planning reform and delivery of skills in the construction sector - will be important for advancing the CCUS industry.” “We need a planning system that doesn’t unduly hinder the rollout of the CCUS projects. While additional capacity and skills in the construction sector will be vital for energy infrastructure projects, ensuring that CCUS clusters are delivered on schedule to meet our climate targets.” “However, for the UK to maintain a competitive edge in CCUS deployment, the Government must urgently provide long-awaited updates on project selection for Track-2, Track-1 expansion, and other CCUS projects capable of deploying on similar timelines. “Decisive action now will enable the UK to achieve clean power by 2030, reduce emissions by 81% by 2035, and, crucially, reach net zero by 2050.”
