Yesterday I attended Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry (CFCI)’s discussion on the Building Safety Act and Grenfell Tower disaster. Discussions explored the changes in building safety regs and how the new legislation aims to prevent such tragedy happening again. Insightful topics such as fire safety, accountability and the role played by private/public sectors were covered. Grenfell serves as a stark reminder of the need for rigorous safety measures and how paramount transparency truly is in the construction industry. I found the contributions of the panellists thought-provoking and refreshing, also providing excellent material for my university research on the BSA legislation. A great project to be part of alongside my colleague Luke Reynolds and the entire Cambourne team.

We don’t always get it right. There are plenty of posts on LinkedIn about supporting employees. Many talk about when an employee decides to leave their job, it’s the company’s fault for not supporting them enough. In all honesty when reading these posts in the past I felt pretty smug. At CB3 Consulting I felt we were at the top of our game with supporting our employees. I mean, I knew we’d got more to learn as no person or business is perfect but on the whole, I thought ‘we’ve got this’. Well, we hadn’t. We have regular ‘catch ups’ with our employees (this being one of the main reasons I thought we’d got it right). I assumed should there be any problems this would be the perfect place to discuss it; I was wrong. It is easy for an employee to say everything is ok, it is a lot harder for them to admit when there is a problem and maybe (as employers) it’s a lot harder for us to accept there’s a problem. When an employee told us they didn’t feel supported enough I was completely shocked and at first and, I’m ashamed to admit, a little defensive. They told us we didn’t offer enough help to combat stress, and they were right, we didn’t. Quantity Surveying is such a wonderful career, in fact I would say it’s probably one of the best, but it can be stressful especially when meeting strict deadlines. We should have noticed this before it was pointed out to us. The problem is we’ve all accepted stress as ‘part of the job’ when it shouldn’t be. So, what have we learnt? Not to just listen to our employees but to truly put ourselves in their shoes. We are now in discussions on what we can do to combat stress within the company. The fact is though, we will continue to make mistakes. As much as I would like to say we won’t but as long as we’re learning from them, hopefully we can stop anyone working for us feeling unsupported again.
