Planting for the Future! 🌱 🌿 Last week, some of the SDC team visited Olney to see our woodland creation project firsthand and joined in on the planting efforts! Once complete, the orchard will feature around 35 fruit trees, sourced from a local supplier, and is expected to yield fruit within 2–3 years. The forested area will be planted with approximately 8,750 trees at a high density of 2,500 trees per hectare to maximise carbon sequestration. With 1000 trees being planted daily over the next week, this initiative will enhance biodiversity, support our net-zero goals and create a green space for the community! 🌳 Find out more about this exciting project here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/expJ348u Forest of Marston Vale

At SDC, we’re proud to celebrate the talented women who are redefining construction. Across our business, women are making an impact in design, health and safety, project management, photography and beyond – bringing fresh perspectives, driving innovation and helping to build a more inclusive industry. This #WICWeek, we’re continuing to share the voices of the women who are shaping the future of construction. Their stories not only reflect the progress we’ve made but also the opportunities ahead as we strive towards a more diverse and dynamic workforce. Empowering women in construction is about more than increasing numbers – it’s about breaking barriers, championing leadership and inspiring the next generation. #WomenInConstruction #WICWeek2025

👷♀️ Women in Construction Week 2025: Empowering Industry Leaders 👷♀️ Construction has long been a male-dominated industry, but progress is being made. In 2025, women represent 15% of the UK construction workforce – a 4% increase in just the last five years. This shift marks the beginning of a promising change, with more women considering careers in construction and companies reaping the benefits of a diverse workforce. At SDC, the focus of this year’s Women in Construction (WIC) Week is all about empowering women to take on leadership roles, embrace new technologies, and foster a mentorship culture for future generations. Women currently make up 12% of SDC’s workforce and can be found across all sectors of our business. Here are the views of just a few of them:

🎉Celebrating Success! The Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service Youth Engagement Service (YES) Team proudly delivered a successful Public Art Unveiling Ceremony at the Peterhouse Technology Park for British Land on 27.01.25. Designed by internationally renowned artist Nathaniel Rackowe, the iconic Corten sculpture, titled Border Realm, reflects Peterhouse Technology Park’s role as a centre for technology & innovation ⚙️🔬. The public art complements the Optic Building, a high-quality R&D facility designed by award-winning architects Ed Hayden Scott Brownrigg. Border Realm creates dynamic views as viewers approach it from different angles, fostering a dialogue between the sculpture, the Optic Building & the surrounding landscape. Inspired by the contour lines of the nearby Cherry Hinton Chalkpits, the sculpture incorporates patterns & drawings by students from Fulbourn Primary School, following 2 Design Workshops facilitated by the YES Team Youth Researchers Dr. Bonnie Kwok MBE CMgr FCMI FRSA, Tom Davies MRTPI FRSA & Maxine Ross. This truly embodies the essence of public art – reflecting the local community’s aspirations & can easily be enjoyed by the general public. The ceremony was attended by 50 Year 6 students & their teachers, who participated in the YES Design Workshops in April 2024. It was a memorable moment for the students to see their artistic input incorporated into the sculpture and to unveil it alongside Nathaniel Rackowe. The event was supported by British Land Development Directors Lynn Summerfield (FCIOB) & Amber Morley, SDC Builders Ltd & attended by notable figures including Cllr Katie Thornburrow, Cllr. Dr. Tumi Hawkins, Cllr Claire Daunton, Cllr John Williams, our senior planning managers Heather Jones FCIOB FCABE FInstLM AIFireE FRSA & Jane Green, our partners Rosie Glenn & Stace. The event included a review of the students’ design activities, speeches, a tour of the newly completed Optic Building & a fun quiz designed by Sarah Moss, British Land Development Executive, culminating in a ribbon-cutting ceremony. 😊 The YES Design Workshops, held in April 2024, involved 50 Year 5 students (now Year 6) from Fulbourn Primary School. The workshops included careers talk & educational activities to obtain local children’s input into the public art process. The students visited the site, the Cherry Hinton Chalkpits & Nature Reserves, produced drawings & models to express their experiences. These were analysed by the YES Team and studied by Nathaniel Rackowe to inform his art. We are thrilled to see Nathaniel incorporated the students’ drawings into the Border Realm sculpture, which is highly appreciated by the students & the local community. 👍 Many thanks to Guy Wilson, Emily Jacob & Shaheeda Montgomery for supporting this project. Employer success stories: Morgan Sindall & SDC. Yesterday marked the end of this year's brilliant #NationalApprenticeshipWeek, and we are delighted to share that the first official FutureIN Property & Construction apprenticeship completion is expected in May 2025, a defining moment for the programme and everyone involved. Morgan Sindall Construction in particular has played a key role in FutureIN, surpassing its initial target by hiring six interns during the Unity Campus project. Four of these individuals have since secured permanent employment, and one has transitioned to the Mill Yard project in central Cambridge. Over the next two years, Morgan Sindall aims to provide 11 more internships at Mill Yard. Jamie Shearman, Area Director for Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “The FutureIN programme has proven itself to be an extremely valuable support mechanism for vulnerable young people in the Cambridge area. What’s more, it’s helping to train the next generation of construction professionals across a range of in-demand skills. This talent is needed in the built environment sector to develop the sustainable, high-quality buildings we need to live, learn and relax in, which means that FutureIN is already creating a legacy in more ways than one.” SDC Builders Ltd, a leading contractor operating under an Employee Benefit Trust, has also embraced FutureIN, hosting five participants to date, with two currently engaged and two more set to start soon. The company is poised to become the second-largest supporter of FutureIN apprenticeships after Morgan Sindall. You can read our latest blog, which provides an update on the programme and plans for the future, here: https://ow.ly/eWVt50UWRmb It also details how you can get involved. Thank you to all FutureIN supporters and sponsors - we couldn't do it without you. #CambridgeGrowth #Internships #Apprenticeships #ConstructionSkills #NAW
