Had a fantastic few days hosting Lotte Carr and getting our hands on the Highway 1 system :) It is a very user-friendly instrument, really simple to set up, has automated clog removal, it is fast, sterile, and gentle on the cells 🥳 We will see how our sorted cells are doing over the next few weeks but I am very optimistic 😬 #cellsorting #flowcytometry #Highway1 #EMBL

Yesterday, an exciting experiment took place in Borstel, Hamburg: bacteria-infected macrophages were sorted at 97% purity on the Highway1, and the output analyzed using imaging cytometry. This was a true collaborative effort between: 🔹 VIB Flow Core Leuven 🔹 Flow Core Borstel 🔹 VIB Metabolomics Core 🔹 Cellular Highways A special shoutout to Lotte Carr (Cellular Highways Application Specialist) and Jochen Behrends (Head of Flow Core Borstel) for leading the way! While our own Jochen couldn't travel in person, he was omnipresent—at least in spirit (and in photos)! 📸😊

What a brilliant trip to visit Jochen Behrends and his team in the Fluorescence Cytometry Facility at Research Center Borstel in rural north-west Germany! Borstel first opened in 1947 as an institute for Tuberculosis and Leprosy research - hence its rural location. Now part of the Forschungszentrum Borstel, Leibniz Lungenzentrum there is a focus on many diseases including COPD, asthma and TB, meaning the facility sort and image lots of exciting samples. A very cool application to see was image-based sorting of pollen from different flowers; now that spring is on its way there will be lots of different samples available! A highlight for me personally was sorting fixed bacterial-infected macrophages on the Highway1 to 97% purity and then analysing the output using imaging cytometry. Given that we sort in sterile closed cartridges, the Highway1 is ideal for CL3+ work! Finally, it was great to have Jochen Lamote and Lidiia Rumiantseva from VIB with us in spirit for a different project. The collaborative nature of the Flow Cytometry community makes it a joy to be part of!

We had a blast visiting #UTAustin last week. A big thanks to Richard Salinas and the Microscopy and Flow Cytometry core facility for hosting us. We got to see multiple UT Austin campuses and meet many wonderful flow cytometry enthusiasts. My favorite thing to witness was students running their first ever independent cell sorts on the evidently easy-to-use #Highway1 (with only minimal assistance needed from yours truly). What a perfect way to spend the week before #SXSW in ATX!

It's been a truly fantastic week in Heidelberg, meeting scientists at EMBL and DKFZ German Cancer Research Center! Back in 2016 I lived here for a little while and it's been really special to see old faces and new in such a beautiful city.
